Who's the most reliable (ie non-cowboy) local firm for replacement windows?

I've decided to put a stop to all these gale-force winds billowing round the house.

Thanks, Paulus. They both look good. Their web-sites are written in plain English and no buzz words...always a good sign!

I also need summat to block the chimney. I've stuck a Dave Brubeck album over the grate for now, to stop the wind getting down.

Ms Grabec, I know the owner of a window firm. I can have a word with him and ask if I can get mates rates, if you wish? Mind if you mention my name he may charge double!!!

How is it working out? Would you recommend Dave Brubeck or something more on the lines of Nina Hagen?

It's working quite well in the sense that no gales have got down the chimney. On the other hand I can't play the album as it's now on other duties. Swings and roundabouts.

You can get chimney balloons. Stick them up there then inflate and it is perfectly sealed. I expect you'd need a long neck to get in there and blow it up. And long arms to tie the knot but apart from those minor drawbacks they sound great. As will the mighty Dave once you're feeling relaxed in a warmer, draft-free room with reduced external noise entering down the chimney.

I can see lots of additional uses to this. For example it could provide extra seating when you have a few people round. The most boring guest could be lured onto it, before being inflated and stuck up the chimney.
