What do you lot think about everyone getting their DNA took at birth, all present UK residents and all migrants/asylum seekers also having their DNA took???? sctatchinghead

There's pro's and cons obviously but I think the pro's outweigh the cons especially when it comes to solving serious crime!!!!

But I'm still 'sort' of against it!!!! confised

What do you lot think???? sctatchinghead

(I would write more but this fecking kindle keeps fecking up....this is the 3rd time i've tried posting this)!!!! banghead

Yeah, let's do it. It would be one way of exposing the Colonel's many guises.

On the other hand, he's already been born so it seems we've missed the chance.

It's supposed to be removed from the database in those cases. Obviously no-one knows whether it actually is removed.......

Chip your a clever bloke but that's bollocks. They used to but now they arnt allowed to keep your profile on the database if your innocent and intact are removing past profiles off it. It a very confusing point as I know of at least two murder cases being solved from past when a persons DNA has been collected from even stupid crimes like pissing in the street. I am on the database from my past job and have no problem with it being on there. I don't know why people wouldn't want to be on there it's a computer file for gods sake not a biological sample

And before people say about police planting evidence from a DNA profile in database I will gladly explain the whole process over a PM but it will take a while. Simplistic version is a DNA profile is a basic line graph of your homozygous / heterozygous alleles on a given loci which has nothing to do with you genetic characteristic for phenotype but in your junk DNA. So like a thing you see in doctors looking at heart rate how this can be put into a criminal situation to fit up a person is stupid.

That's very true but not what was asked I was going on the defence of the database as a whole and saying getting it from profile to scene is impossible. Obviously if police wanted to plant DNA at scene they would do it anyway and it would be irrelevant to the database

The thing is people think DNA is the be all and end all of evidence it isn't. It's used in collaboration with others. Also in this country all DNA analysis is conducted by private companies and police don't have regular access to archives samples.

As I said I can only go off what happened to me and it was a while back.

Got arrested and questioned over something I had no involvement in and had DNA taken which I objected to. I was clearly told that it would stay on the database. Likewise when I laughably got prosecuted for being drunk and disorderly ( despite the fact I don't drink ) and the case was thrown out at Court I asked my solicitor about the fingerprinting and DNA and she said Plod were entitled to keep it.

If the law has changed and they are retrospectively removing it then that's fair enough.

Whether its a computer file or a sample is irrelevant though surely Compo, if Plod plant your DNA at the scene, its going to match whats on the database innit ?

Yeah, I had a similar situation after a night out in town many moons ago. Punching back at somebody who'd smacked me first was enough to get me carted to the cells. After taking my DNA sample and what not, they turfed me out unceremoniously because I had quite a nasty wound on my hand. No charge, nothing. Still wonder if my DNA is floating around their system. I get what Compo is saying, but it still didn't or doesn't sit right me. Civil liberties and all of that.

Well to my knowledge but I have been out of that game a few years they are removing innocent samples from the database.

My only consolation is I won't live long enough to see the end product of this surveillance society, where there's not a single thing about you that's not in a government or Zuckerberg database.
I feel dreadful for my progeny though. I repeat, FUCK YOU.

Either way, I don't trust coppers.

I don't see why they would need a database to plant DNA? They could arrest someone they wanted to set up and plant his fag end (or whatever), with his DNA on it, at the scene of the crime. They take a swab from him at the nick and make a comparison.

In other words, I don't trust coppers either.

I feel something similar as regards the 'progeny', and not just about surveillance. It feels as if there's nowhere you can go to escape other people's agenda.

A Database held by an independent body with no links to the police makes sense

Chip has obviously had a bad experience with the police. He does not explain why he was taken in and questioned, remember police question loads of people when investigating. He was arrested for being drunk and disorderly was he just standing there doing nothing or was he mouthing off to a police officer? Did he not sue for false arrest or get compensation by the court for false arrest?

Yes there are bent coppers history shows that but 99.9 per cent are honest hard working coppers. Do not for get there are bent solicitors, barristers, judges, priests, builders, bankers etc, etc, do not paint them with the same brush. How many idiot Pools fans have you seen cause trouble but we are not all idiots.

Today's. Mail front page criminal got over six years caught by dna on glove left at scene. How many serious crimes are being solved as a result of dna it's the best crime detection thing invented since fingerprints, I suppose you would get rid of these too.

I sincerly hope it does not happen but if someone breaks into your home assaults you and rapes your wife who will the first person you ring for help. When they arrive will you tell them you do not trust them and they cannot take any samples for examination of dna to help catch the person responsible

Chip you certainly had a bad experience the Met SPG are notorious for being heavy handed and that's putting it mildly but you are still painting every one with the same brush.
The question was about DNA this is the greatest aid to crime detection so do you want to do away with it? My final question about ,I hope fictional, occurrence do you not want the police to use all things at their fingertips to catch the culprit.

I don't really know your point here. Do you realise that once the profile is uploaded (by a private company) it can't be edited by the police. Also what the point in editing it would be I don't know.

I hate shows like CSI etc it's turned everyone into a so called expert on DNA analysis and therefore they think they know how the profiling works. If fact people's knowledge of what a profile is, isn't the fact.

The file that appears to police and forensic eve tiers is this:

https://openi.nlm.nih.gov/detailedresul ... 3-F1&req=4

And conversely, 'Those who surrender security for 'freedom'', will not hang onto it for very long.
As some god botherer once said.... 'The meek shall inherit the earth'...but let's see how long the retain the mineral rights.

I may have misquoted my mate Benji Franklin. The correct quote is "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

I suppose it depends on what your opinion of essential liberty is.

It's a balancing act, both are essential. Total liberty is impossible for obvious reasons.

To be fair, the government will do as Google and Facebook and most other internet companies have been doing for years and just take what they want. For those unaware, Mr I has been accumulating data from everyone on the Bunker since it started. He knows everyone who eats pork faggots and anyone who has bad mouthed Maggie.

One thought about why it shouldn't be kept.... How can you guarantee that it will only be used for the stated purpose? ID'ing potential criminals is after all only one part of what DNA is used for.... say for example that a National Database is set up... it costs money.... so to help fund it, an agreement is reached that it can be used for commercial purposes. Initially this is portrayed merely as "Health/Medical Research" - how prevalent are various genetic conditions in the general population, the sort of thing that looks reasonable enough. Problem then arises though when it turns out that the data supplied isn't as "anonymous" as it's supposed to be, and that Life Insurance companies are using it to deny cover or drastically increase people's premiums. Bear in mind this is one of the things that scuppered that health database thing a year or two back, it's not exactly far fetched....

With DNA kept in storage would it be more open to tampering as per the making a murderer case? No doubt it would be outsourced to such cowboys as G4S to look after. I'm assuming it would have to be physically stored and not just analysed and electronic records kept.

The dna is 'stored' in electronic form. You wouldn't be able to look for matches on-line otherwise.

The alternative would be to take a swab from someone and physically compare it with all the other existing swabs, all over the country!! And how would you do that, even if you had time? All the swabs would look the same, pre-analysis, just sticks of saliva or whatever.

Erm.....I gleaned this information from listening to compo and reading the link he sent at the bottom of page 1 of this thread. ;)

No it isn't as the area forensic scientists look at has nothing to do with coding DNA for anything to do with disease or your genetic make up.
