Sandwiched between the two, the equally fantastic Good Morning Spider.....superb gig at the Riverside in the late 90's, big shame he checked out early doors

Others great debuts not yet mentioned:

Maxinquaye - Tricky
Back In The DHSS - Half Man Half Biscuit
Fuzzy Logic -Super Furry Animals
Eleven:Eleven - Come
George Best - The Wedding Present
License To Ill - Beastie Boys
Dry - PJ Harvey
Safe As Milk - Captain Beefheart
Pod - The Breeders
Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot - Sparklehorse
Yerself Is Steam - Mercury Rev

A great nights listening there....

Yeah, some belters right there. Maxinquaye should really have been on my list. It don't always think of it as a debut even though it unquestionably is. I was stunned when I first heard Dry and probably looked forward to Rid of Me more than I'd looked forward to any release in years. It did not disappoint, and I played both that and the 4-track Demos to death over the next couple of years. I need to revisit Dry as it's a damn fine album in its own right, and one of me favourite debuts.

I spent a lovely nostalgic night a few weeks back watching SFA perform Fuzzy Logic and Radiator. So many tunes in there it felt like a "Best Of..." set.

Rid Of Me probably still my favourite of hers, even though the last two have been absolute stunners. You just can't beat an Albini 'production' can you?

Great call for George Best by The Wedding Present (headlining an indie all dater May bank holiday in Manchester to play album in full by the way). A cliched but excellent debut album Whatever People Say I am that's what I'm not - Arctic Monkeys

Also playing it in full at Newcastle Academy in June. Seen them twice in the last couple of months, always great value...

A handful of more recent debuts that I've liked a lot

Girl Band - Holding Hands With Jamie
Marika Hackman - We Slept At Last
Metz - Metz
Traams - Grin
Anna Meredith - Varmints
Gazelle Twin - The Entire City
Viet Cong (now called Preoccupations) - Viet Cong

That Girl Band record is hellish, one of me faves of the last few years

I was listening to Its a Wonderful Life by Sparklehorse last night.

Bit ironic considering he shot himself. I think his wife died last year as well.

Great album nonetheless.

He called it that because he almost killed himself accidentally prior to recording it.
