I can't help wondering how many of these mad old men from the 60's were actually traumatised WW1 veterans.

Update to this one, David Dobson died recently, there was an appeal for his relatives but don't know if anyone came forward. Don't know if it was the same one but was born in 1940 so kind of tallies up. He used to petrify us as kids, he'd come out and chase us or scream out of his windows at us.

Hartlepool does seem to have more than it's fair share of eccentrics. I remember discussing this with a fellow Poolie exile once, and he reckoned it was because the town is such a conformist sort of place where anyone a bit different is often castigated, it makes people go even more the other way.

Apparently we are all radged to some degree though, I used to play footy with a builder who had worked all over with people from all over, and he said every single Hartlepudlian he'd ever met had a screw loose.
