Purely by chance saw a documentary last night about the England players recalling the final with various anecdotes and it was a joy to watch.
On the day of the final two players went into Hendon to get some new shoes for the do on the night, they travelled in on the bus and were unrecognised by the public.
Alf Ramsey, at the final whistle as Wembley erupted, oredered his bench to remain seated and not draw attention to themselves.
The win bonus was £22,000 .... to be shared between the entire squad which was to be paid out on pro rata appearances.Bobby Moore insisted it be shared out equally.
Geoff Hurst said he actually did go home and cut the grass and wash the car the next day because it had to be done.
Really nice people with a down to earth attitude. Driving home afterwards Alan Ball called in a roadside cafe and oredered egg and chips which he ate unrecognised in peace.
A pleasure to watch.

I met Jack Charlton one morning on the bridge in Haydon Bridge. He was going fishing and wanted to know which pub was best for a sandwich and a pint later on. Had a bit of a chat and he seemed like a very nice, normal bloke.

My son got to school and told his mates that the tall, scruffy old bloke on the bridge had won the World Cup and they all just took the piss and refused to believe him.

Should make those Millionaires playing now watch what it really means to represent your Country. If they had their even half their spirit maybe we'd still be in with a chance of winning something.

A few years ago, 5 I think, my lad was playing in a tournament for his sunday league team at that college opposite Maiden castle.

A bloke walked over to the team during a warm upand introduced himself. He shook all the lads hands and then did an impromptu training session with them.

Only for a bout 5 minutes. He then walked off. They all stood there and asked who he was.

They werenet fazed or bothered at all.

Unlike us parents who stood there mouths open.

It was Geoff Hurst.

I went to a screening of that Forest film not long ago, which featured a Q and A with Gary Birtles. This is a gadgie who won two European cups, the league, a league cup and England caps. Yet he lived in a modest semi and drank in his local. As did most of the Forest squad at that time. Different world.

Bobby Charlton recalled how he played no part in the final even though he was obviously on the pitch. Sir Alf told him to man mark Franz Beckenbauer. Franz Beckenbauer ironically was tol by his manager to man mark....... Bobby Charlton, and they ended up cancelling each other out.
They discussed it post match and had to laugh at it.

A good documentary. Loved the anecdote of one of the squad meeting up with his missus. 'We have half an hour....fancy a quick one?' Missus replied 'Not a chance.....just had me hair done'. Greavsies take on not being picked for the final were both poignant....and barbed.

The press turned up the next day at Alf Ramseys modest semi to speak to him. He walked to his equally modest car and informed them it was his day off. End of 'conversation'.

and now we have this Ibrahmiovich Bell-End wanting 220k a week and Mourinho taking 72 hours to sign a contract whilst they bicker over his image rights.
