I have one in my wallet, decent condition.

Some on eBay are going for over a grand - i'm guessing they're the ones that haven't been through the system??

Probs worth a tenner maybe...

Any coin that is a bit more than a standard design can be sold for more on ebay. If you ever find a 20p without a year on they are worth loads, alternatively if you find a Kew Gardens 50p you can sell them for anything up to £100

A lad I work with cottoned on to this and put one on E Bay a few months ago, he got £1.54 for his 50 pence coin but forgot to put postage and packaging on which cost him over £2.

I know you can make money on rare ones but anyone spending more than its monetary value on a coin at the very least deserves filling in.

Can you imagine if you put what you thought was a 'rare' £10 note on and the winning bid was only £2 or something? I'm sure there'd be a moral in that story somewhere, like the financial crash.

I've got a full set of ninja turtles collectors coins from when I was a kid. I have no Benjamin Buttons though. There's a lad at work is bang into this 50p being worth a tenner etc. I don't get it.

I have a brand new £1 note (obviously not brand new but in pristine condition), is that worth out?

It's time to plug the LRB again. John Lanchester, who writes some great stuff on finance, has a good (but long) piece on money in the latest edition.

http://www.lrb.co.uk/v38/n08/john-lanch ... n-grows-up

In short, money is worth whatever you believe it is worth, but in reality, it is worthless. My favourite money fact is in there; only around 5 per cent of all money in the UK is backed by real money in the bank. If we all claimed our money from the bank tomorrow, we'd all get 4 pence in the pound. It's a bit like being a creditor of Darlow.
