Best music book I've ever read is Last Train To Memphis by Peter Guralnick. It made me completely rethink Elvis Presley by spending a lot of time building up the historical context and establishing how important the fact that he mixed black R and B music with white country singing. He didn't invent rock n roll and he but he did take it to a new and different level that gave it a massive cultural impact and opened the gates for many more, better in my opinion, musicians. The fact he ended up a fat club singer releasing dreadful MOR dirges doesn't change that.

The Beatles did a similar job for the idea that bands should write and perform their own songs, and then that albums mattered more than singles. I rarely listen to them but they were massively influential and broke a lot of ground - even Mull of Kintyre doesn't change that. If I'm after a bit of 60s business I much prefer to listen to The Kinks and The Stones but I wouldn't try to argue that The Beatles were shit.

Well let's see.

The Beatles: Getting Better
The Stones: You'd Better Move On
The Who: You Better You Bet
The Kinks: Better Things

Nope, impossible to say who is the better group, but the Beatles are obviously improving.

I use to know someone who thought the Beach Boys were better than the Beatles. In all other respects he was perfectly normal.

Erm yeah, sorry, cheap joke. But my friend was basing his opinion on other factors such that he thought the Beatles were somehow degenerate, and the Beach Boys more..... healthy.

The Beach Boys did make excellent songs...many, like 'Caroline, No', were haunting.

Yeah did some excellent songs and thieved a few along the way. Like Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen" and changing the words to have a hit with Surfin USA. And Brian Wilson was surprised when Chuck refused to speak to him again. And Chuck had to take him to court to get back the royalties and copyright to his song. Although Wilson has put that much shit into his body he wouldn't know which song he had wrote and which song he hadn't.

Pet Sounds is still very listenable, as is Revolver and Rubber Soul but I struggle to get through Sgt Peppers or even The White Album nowadays.

Some of the best albums of the late 60's didn't shift great numbers...."Village Green" and "Arthur" -The Kinks, "Oddesey and Oracle" -The Zombies, "SF Sorrow"- The Pretty Things, "Dusty In Memphis", "Scott 3" - Scott Walker , "Faintly Blowing" Kaleidoscope, "Stand Up"-Tull etc

Listen to these most weeks I reckon, and was lucky to inherit a lot on vinyl. Mind, I also inherited a LOT of "Blues Bilge" like Ten Years After/John Mayall/Clapton/Chicken Shack/Early Fleetwood Mac stuff too and most of that is pretty unlistenable.

None of they wrote a more poetic song that Gilbert O Sullivan. Nothing rhymed is a classic of songwriting.

The lyrics of 'Nothing Rhymed' are on a par with 'You Gotta Be' by Des'Ree.

Is that the one with 'toast' and 'ghost'? That is a piss-take song if I've ever heard one. I thought it was called 'Life' though?

Toast and ghost was William Blake compared with You Gotta Be.

Anyway, if we are going to appraise Gilbert O'S surely it should be on the strength of Ooh Wacka Doo Wacka Day.

I'm sure The Bonzos had this lot in mind when they wrote "Can Blue Men Sing the Whites"
