I got a Newcastle strip for my 8th birthday. Other than that just England strips. I used to play footy with a lad who had at least a dozen full strips, including Newcastle (home and away), Tottenham (home and away), England (home and away), Pools (wahey!), and Barcelona. He sometimes used to go home and change them mid game.

It struck me the other day when I was in a sports shop - who buys Argentina and Germany tops? There can't be that many ex-pats about, so what sort of unpatriotic English individual buys them?

Apart from the Pools and Sunderland kits that I had from being little, I also had a Wolves top. Nylon effort, straight out of the bargain bin in Sportsworld. I must have been about six years old, so about 79 or 80 maybe, and remember as a treat my mother let me and our kid pick a strip out. I picked Wolves for some unknown reason (had they just won the League Cup?) and my brother picked Arsenal.

I also remember that when I got to 8 or 9 I had the Sunderland home and away kits (the away being the blue Admiral one) and when we played footie on the Rec on a Sunday I used to wear the home one if Sunderland had played at home on the Saturday and the away one if they'd had an away game. I think in the summer I used to have to use a different selection method.

The first quality replica kit (with badges and that) I remember was the Brazil one from the 1970 World Cup. Me and me mates would go up to Ward Jackson Park for a kick about and one lad had the Brazil top, which made us all madly jealous. Anyhow, a few days later one of me other mates phoned me up and said he had the Peru top and would be proudly wearing it at the next game. When he turned up everbody p!ssed themselves laughing, as he was sporting a plain white shirt with some red sticky back plastic that his mam had stuck diagonally across it !!!

First shirt I ever owned was the 1995 Aston Villa away kit - navy blue with the AST logo. A cracker, that strip.

First Pools shirt I personally owned was the promotion strip. I inherited my brother's old ones because he used to get a new one each year

I was Man City daft as a nipper so obviously had various Man City kits home and away, I used to dive around in penalty boxes a la Franny Lee, used to tightly grip shirts cuffs in hands a la Denis Law and me Mam painstaking used to sew stips of cloth on the back to make number 11's a la Denis Tueart!

First England strip Admiral with red and blue stripe down sleeve a la Colin Bell!

Remember those number tags tie ups for socks made famous by Dirty Dirty Leeds?
