Talking about the Clash, Rachid Taha's Arabic version of Rock the Casbah completely eclipsed the original.

The bloke who wrote "Handbags And Gladrags" was Mike D'Abo, was actually the Singer in Manfred Mann at the time (67-70), and he recorded the Original Version. Chris Farlowes version was a cover. Hope that helps.

Sinead O'Connor's version of Nothing Compares 2 U.

Not really a fan of anything else she's done but that's a cracker.

Er, yes Phil, it really helps. Confirming what I said an' all like.
Do keep up.

It was a bit like "I wanna be your man" by the Beatles. The Stones version is the reference. The Beatles couldn't be arsed with it at first.

Ewan McColl wrote some great songs but he didn't always do them justice. His doesn't really convey that sense of grubbiness for me.

By the way, I've always wondered; what the hell is a gasworks crawl?

Practically anybody's version of Route 66 is better than the original...

But these grandaddies get my vote:

Yes i agree with you about that. His songs were very good but very bare boned in his traditional fashion. Maybe the gasworks crawl was his way home from the pub?

Sorry Mr Twig but I hate that Pogues version of Dirty Old Town. If I had a voice like that I don't think I'd think of trying to earn a living singing!

That's because the Beatles were shite and their entire oeuvre reached its peak with "Love Me Do", so nothing is known after that.
10cc, Bryan Adams, Herb Alpert, (Ambrose) Slade, Amen Corner, Bad Company, Bananarama, Shirley Bassey, Stevie Wonder, The Stones ............ oh fuck it look for yourselves https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of ... tles_songs ....... only covered their songs out of sympathy.

Shite is harsh but not far off the mark. The original boy band with boy band songs.

Have I done this aright? Probably not....but it's Dusty singing Ne me quitte pas.

I like this. Much as I love Brel's songs, I often prefer them sung by someone else.

By the way, Flossie Mallavialle will probably be singing it at Sedgefield folk club this year...also a good version.

Someone clearly nicked 7/8ths of your Beatles collection before you could listen to it.

A chacun son goût. I can't think of any Brel song that I prefer by someone else. But you really need to be fluent in French to get the original.
Mort Schumann had a pretty decent stab at translating them, except that the translation of, let's say, "Chanson de Jacky", is utterly pointless when taken out of its angsty 1960s Belgian context.

The second half of my comment was a wind up but I genuinely don't enjoy their music.

Which I'm not...but I've looked into the background of the song a bit more and can see that 'If you go away' has nothing to do with it.

Have been discussing translations on another site, and you could go on forever discussing the ins and outs, but in this case I don't even think you can 'get' the song by having fluent French. You need to know Brel's personal circumstances at the time, and to know that he himself described the song as being about 'the cowardice of men' (which I take to mean 'mankind' rather than 'males'.)

The song now comes over to me as having an 'unreliable narrator' aspect ie he's blotted out the reason for her going and is treating the situation as if it's merely the simple 'end of an affair'. Very complex.
Anyway, people, sorry about all this on a footie site.

Brel could say what he liked but it's pretty much universally accepted his songs were basically all bout himself. And to get the full picture you really need to watch him singing because there's a whole ton of body language in there. Recommended viewing: "Ces Gens Là".

Just thought of one anglosphere artist who really did get Brel. Alex Harvey.

Best cover for today has to be Aux Armes Etcetera by Gainsbourg. Can't do links on my phone but it's on YouTube and we'll worth searching for.
