As a nipper I used to love going through it on the 227, and having a look in the taxidermists window.

I had a night on the piss there when I was about 19, as my mates uncle lived there, his wife had left him so we took him out to get back tapping the flap. Yes, I know, Greatham, bad idea and that. But he enjoyed himself.

I seem to remember 3 pubs, and apparently locals would only drink in the one pub, and never venture into the others.

It seemed odd back then, I doubt it has changed much.

My outlaws are from Greatham & I can confirm it is strange indeed.
My father in law only leaves the village once a fortnight when our lass picks him up,takes him to Asda, then drops him off again.
I used to get loads of grief years ago too because I was a towny going out with one of the village girls
Our lass has been told in no uncertain terms that we would live in a tent on the beach before we would ever go live in Greatham.

It's not all that bad after all I lived there for 25 years. Mind our lass say the same thing Groovy.

as for the pubs it was better when the Greathem Club was open you could get a few drinks in there when you were about 16  . The three pubs that are left are easy The top (smiths arm) was for mainly people from the fens, Middle house ( Bull & dog)this was the village pub and the bottom (hope & ancher) was a pub for the younger people of the village.

Another thing about village life you alway knew what was going to happen before it even did. :uhoh:

Then we got this

Stroll on

Greatham is a very strange village, I'm from the Fens & Worked in the Hope & Anchor

It was like they couldnt accept me as a member of staff because I was an 'Outsider'

Laughed my head off when I read that.

Sounds to me that you were lucky to get out with your life
