I sat and watched the fire unfold on the television. The afternoon sports program kept going to ground first of all a bit light heartedly saying there was smoke coming from the wooden stand then a few minutes later they went back and the whole place was ablaze with people running onto the pitch actually with their on fire. Never forget that day.

I watched it unfold anarl, we were at Chester, was going to go as I hadnt been to Chester before, knew there wouldnt be more than 20 of us there, thats the sort of game I like to be present at. Funnily enough I had another crack at Chester season afterbut the lift never turned up. Finally got to Chester in 92/93 but by then they had left Sealand Road. BTW though Bradford game, initailly thought it was just a fire with no casualties, lots of fans laughing about it, then it unfolded that it was a major tragedy, terrible, a precursor to the others that followed Hilsborough and Heysel in that horrible decade the 80s.

I'd been in that stand Easter 1981 for our 2-0 defeat. Got a Comp Ticket outside from Trevor Hogg (he only played a few times) who was in the Squad but didn't make the bench that day. The majority of Pools fans were up on the Open Terrace to our left and there was a bit of trouble inside the ground with Pools fans so we kept our colours under our jackets that day but when you see the footage the area where the fire began is about where we were stood.

I was at that game that day on the terracing, there was some right bother that day. I walked through the turnstile and was hit with a half brick flung from the Bradford End, luckily it hit me in the side, and the donkey jacket I was wearing cushioned the blow somewhat.
I was with a van-full of friends mainly Sunderland fans who'd agreed to go as they didn't have a game that day. I remember the carnage in the toilet block at half-time with various Bradford fans layed around in various states who'd stupidly decided to climb over the 8ft wall segregating their end from ours.

This could so easily have happened at Pools in the old stand. It's actually a wonder it never did.

Just shows what contempt fans were treated with in those days. I'm no health and safety fanatic but thankfully the chances of something like that happening again are pretty slim now.
