I'm surprised no one has mentioned how full the stands where and only a 5000 crowd given last Saturday I wouldn't like to see another 3000 fit in there that's for sure.

I thought the official attendance was way of the mark.
Couldnt see how there was 2000 under the home capacity of 6800.

There was maybe 250 seats in the Cyril Knowles Stand and couldn't see many other places you could fit many more in.

Cambridge brought 269 and away end holds 1035, so theres 766 seats.

Considering the millhouse side of the ground holds 3500 ish there should be lots of empty seats don't forget there was quite a few stood in the aisles and behind the millhouse terrace as well.

The beauty of the Vic is that with 5,000 in the place looks full. When it is actually full it looks a lot more rammed than it did on Saturday. Especially the Town End and Millhouse Terrace. The crowd looked spot on.

We currently sit 14th in the Lg.2 crowd averages on 3569, surprisingly ahead of teams such as Bury, Burton and Newport, who are in the top 6.

That cup game against Leeds in hte 70's when there was officially about 10'000 in but was dangerously overcrowded. I as a kid was sat on the wall on the Mill house side and there was not an inch of breathing space in the ground. Even the walkway in front of the MH standing area was packed. Each corner was full along with all of the gangways on hte MH stand. At sea level, each and every piece of ground was taken, it was truly, truly packed. There must have been 16'000-17'000 in the ground that night.

largest home crowd I have witnessed is Spurs in 1990, 9,600. That was with the roof off the town end and the portacabins on Clarence Road.

What really stands out about the night in addition to Gazza doing the press-ups with about a dozen kids whilst warming up.....was the queues to get in on the millhouse side. I seem to remember going into the ground about an hour before kick off and there was queues even then back up to the car park and remember, we were already 5 nil down from the first leg

Factually correct as I think the official capacity is nearly 7,900.

It is rammed when it's that full but not rammed in the sense grounds used to be which was let's be honest, dangerously full. Its mad that grounds like Roker Park have record attendances of 75,000. I know people look back fondly at things like that in an 'I was there' way but being in a ground that should hold at best half of that can't have been an enjoyable experience. Also how many of those could actually properly see the game? It was probably more like 90 minutes of self preservation rather than watching the game.

I have been to Highbury on at least 3 occasions when they put the attendance as 60,000 and yet it wasn't all ticket and funnily enough, the ground capacity was 60,000 at the time. No idea how many extra were in but as you say, a disaster waiting to happen although I didnt care at the time. I was just a daft kid.

No worse then the daily commute on the tube today mind bbolt

The Vic can be rammed with 6800 Poolies. The neck end of a thousand places aren't ours to ram.

I think the official attendance for that game was 16,000 +

I think so too Mr Dixon. In fact I know so.

There were a few scary moments I'll admit. We were getting 11000 crowds in the league at the end of our first promotion season and it was crowded but orderly. And I believe the capacity went down a fair bit when they built the Mill House stand.
It was stretching the imagination already to believe we could get another five thou in, so I've no problem accepting 16,000 as the true figure.

ha! well spotted PJ, to expand, when 6800 in there is still room to turn full circle in the likes of the Mill House, when it has 7900 in it is only then it begins to get tight, though I think the ground could easily hold 9000 without anyone being killed in the crush/stampede.

16000 v Leeds and it was rammed in Town End and Mill House terrace, dangerously so in the Town End. In them days though people gravitated towards the middle of the wherever the singing was and you could have a situation where it was overcrowded there but thinly populated at the sides. It wasnt though that night. You always knew when there was 6000 plus at pools when people stood on the corner areas under the floodlights. Mind you in my first 20 years following pools 6000+ crowds only happened a few times.

I wasn't being pedantic it was more to make my point about how ridiculously full grounds used to be allowed to get. I mean 16-17,000 in the Vic is absurd! When it's at capacity now it looks rammed.

The core of the lads from the collieries were basically the lads who used to follow Sunderland away on Frankie Wheatleys bus. Remember they turned up at Pools for a couple of games in 1980 v Huddersfield and Walsall. Some good lads amongst them but right nutters!
