Do the English celebrate st Georges day? I've never celebrated paddy day either but don't see any harm in it. It's just another commercial success like Easter or Christmas which I bet you celebrate?

St Patrick's Day in France always amused me. The pubs were all packed ... full of people looking like they're thinking, "Right, we're here. Er yeah. What happens now? Oh look, an orange wig!"

As far as irrelevant goes, well, I once asked an atheist Irish mate of mine why he celebrated a religious festival like St P's. His answer was on the lines of religious it might be but it's the national day of my country and that's what I'm celebrating. The English just aren't into national holidays. In Spain there's like one a month.

Talking of St George's Day, what a dumb thing to celebrate. It's just copying the Irish. Saints aren't in the English DNA, especially a Greco-Palestinian one.

Paddy's day was virtually non-existant in England until about 20 years ago, when Guiness effectively sponsored the event.

I never turn down the excuse for a piss-up, so am happy to celebrate any day really, apart from Adolf Hitler's birthday.

My brother in law is Spanish, and they have a festival near where he comes from celebrating the edible snails you get in that area. Towns and villages all dressing up as snails, with giant snail floats driving about. Sounds ellish, and I want to take the kids to it when they're a bit older.

I went to some cracking Paddy's day piss ups when I lived in Hartlepool and I left in 1978, so I think your point of it not starting until about 1995 is a bit out, Mr PIN.
I remember watching Eddie Larkin, who was the Landlord of The Bourne Hotel and then The Saxon, sing Paddy McGinty's goat at a paddy's night do when I was twenty and that is fifty years ago.
Any excuse for a piss up is not a modern phenomenon.

Sant Jordi’s day really is a national holiday in Catalonia, and one of the biggest. I suppose I could lie and say I'm celebrating it for England.

I especially like this twist:
"Roses have been associated with this day since medieval times, but the giving of books is a more recent tradition originating in 1923, when a bookseller started to promote the holiday as a way to commemorate the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare on 23 April, 1616."
