Reading a book called Vintage Hartlepool, and it lists a group of Hotels, Inns and Taverns in West Hartlepool in 1895. Among them are some seriously obscure names, and one's I've never heard of even mentioned by some of the old lags when reminiscing.
For example.....The Steam Packet, Crooked Billet, Stein, Sadlers, Vale of Avoca, Oak Tree, Crown and Sceptre, Burton, Cardiff Arms, Royal Exchange, Oxford Arms, Malt and Hops, Normanby, Normanby Hall, Royal Albert, Lord Nelson, Dundass, Leeds Northern, Acorn, Brown Jug, London Tavern, Turf, Talbot, Waterloo, Iron Ship, Waverly and Enterprise(trekkie bar sctatchinghead )

The London Tavern was decent, lots of top notch women frequented the gaff.

Vale of Avoca sounds like the place where sailors went to get some dirty water off their chest.

Just checked on the internet, it's apparently one of the prettiest spots in Co.Wicklow Eire. So an Irish bar I guess.
