Having to clear a load of Vinyl ahead of a house move. I know about Sound it Out & the place up in the Toon but is John still running the Other Record Shop on Erroll St? . Heard it went bust but don't live in Pools so haven't checked it out. Trying Tom at Sound it Out First but thought I'd try John for any leftovers if he's still open rather than trekking up to the Tyne. Also can't find any news of any Nth-East Record fairs on the 'net. Anybody know anything please about 'owt in the Nth-East. Used to be a regular one in the Boro in the Crypt but not heard of one for ages. Nearest one seems to be in Leeds.

Ta in advance for any advice.

He's still open but I doubt he'd give you a good price.

Tom recently acquired a massive collection from a nightclub owner so don't know if he has the space.

Gary from Betterdaze in Northallerton is always on the lookout for collections.

Failing that I might be interested but I only collect 7" singles.

Bit of a trek if you live in the north east but Vinyl Tap in Huddersfield have given me a decent price when I've sold stuff in the past.

I didn't know John the Con's was still going? It must be the concert tickets that's bringing in the money for him...

Last time I had a chat with him he pretty much said that - he had lots of CDs but his vinyl stock was very low.

I have no idea how he is still open. Ripped me off thousands of times as a kid, now every time i walk past there is a sign on the door saying 'back in 10 mins'

I worked there for a while and John generally gave people about 50% of what he could sell records for if they shifted straightaway. A fair bit of stock would take longer to sell and would go with a lot lower mark up or at a loss. In my experience John was a decent bloke who gave people fair prices and pit up with a lot of moaning from people who were convinced that scratched records that nobody wanted were still worth 90% of their new price. He was just very unlucky that his name rhymed with con.

Mind, the 'Back in 10 minutes' sign has been in use for more than three decades and he's never got back within the 10 minutes once.

It's a decent little shop but it could do with a clean. Last time I was in there everything was a bit dusty. I don't know whether his heart is still in it but if he got a couple of people in he could probably make a good go of it. You only have to look at Sound it Out up the road to see that there is still interest in Independent record shops.

I used to play football with John back in the Seventies (just kickabouts), he usually played in goal and was in a near permanent state of hysterical panic.
