It has been brought to my attention, that the cheeky bounder next door is "leeching" off of my wireless internet connection! rage

Not being particularly well versed in these things, could anyone tell me what i need to do so he cant?

(Im using a Linksys WRT54G router btw) Many thanks!

Break the fingers on both of his hands then he won't be able to log on.

or

You need to enable security which will be WEP in the setup. It is part of the authentication process and is a 26 code of anny combination of letters characters, unless someone knows the code they can't connect.

You can also hide the ssid of the wireless router, another configurable item in the set up procedure. Then your neighbours won't even see it on their pc

I personally would use WPA-PSK, but as long as you put some kind of password protection on that should be enough to stop him leeching.

More likely you'd get the visit.... it has actually happened at least once where some unsuspected person with an open wireless connection has had a visit from the boys in blue to discuss their browsing habits... and has only then realised that a neighbour has been taking advantage of the connection.

There was even a trend for a while in London for people to make chalk marks on buildings where they had found an unsecure wireless network as a sign for others... once they realised what was going on some of the IT people kept a lookout for them as they then knew they needed to toughen up the security.....

Either WEP or WPA protection, one is more secure than the other but either is a lot better than nothing.
