No, I don't know the jobs you mean.
Why, Chip and I were responsible for sending benefit giros to whole of South London at one time. Double somersaults are all very well in their way, but they don't keep the wolf from the door

whoa there...you go on about taxes and public money being wasted and you want the nash slipping a few quid here and there in the old giros.... you change sides more often than a windscreen wiper...

i didnt do it for long ( 3 years ) and i know exactly what you mean mr bastid. there were people who knew the rules inside out and who were clearly working on the fiddle who proper rang rings round you getting all the benefits under the sun. and there were people who genuinely needed money who you sometimes couldnt help.

obviously wherever you could you would try to help. perhaps by processing claims in your lunch break for a deserving cause, or by accidently losing a claim form from a local drug dealer who arrived at the office in a bmw sporting 6k worth of gold round his neck.

at the end of the day i believe in the welfare state, but its not a job i could do for long because it makes you depressed dealing with a part of society most people would prefer to think didnt exist. half the time i just wanted to shoot people.

thats why i have a lot of time, for teachers and social workers etc who have to deal with that sort of stuff day in day out. you see things in an inner city dss office that make you grateful for having a job and a house and family and decent kids, and i was always thankful at the end of each working day to be going back to my nice family in the posh houses.
How do you keep your blood pressure down, I get pissed off walking past the nash after work every day, how the f**k do you work there............? I have to laugh ironically when certain claimants turn up in a taxi and ask it to hang on....

I know what you mean as some people are obviously taking the mick big style, but then again, some of my residents (homeless 16-21 yr olds) get taxi's on occasions, not because they're flush or taxing the system but if they've just had a giro they might wanna get straight to somewhere and cant be bothered to jump the metro/wait for a bus.
Either that or they just wanna pretend they have money for a change.
Basically they have no idea of budgeting and how to make money last. They just spend it as soon as it arrives.
Two days later they've probably got none left

In reality these kids have had a life of non-judgemental attitudes which is little short of officially sanctioned, organised neglect and confusion for them and what they really need is somone to start setting limits and pointing out the world as it is They actually need someone to be judgemental and guiding, it's a bit like asking someone for directions and being told back "where do you want it to be?" ... or ..." I can't tell you where it's at even though I know, but just keeping driving around and eventually you'll end up some where"

I agree Snowy. You cant ponce around too much with people.
You can be straight and tell them how it is.
They usually respect you more for it, and they learn

Taxpayer (that's laughable in itself, like), yep we're off to Torquay - on the 7.30 train from Paddington, arrive Torquay 10.57. God knows how we're gonna fill the time until kick off but £25 return was too good to miss. For the record I said nothing about your sexuality (which has been pretty well-documented on here I think) on Rivals.

I'm in the Walthamstow part of east London which, as the loid bloke will tell you, is a dump.

I'll add myself to the East London contingent. Whilst living in Manor Park, near Forest Gate, I went to the College next door to the town hall originally Walthamstow Tech and College of Art then named North East London Polytechnic. I later went to the Barking campus of the same college & many years later discovered that the late Paul Mullen had been there at the same time. Saw many excellent bands at both the college and town hall - Pink Floyd, Country Joe & the Fish, Deep Purple, Ian Dury (Kilburn & the High Roads), Caravan, Family, Love, Pink Fairies, and of course my favourites Hawkwind.
As this thread has mention of folk clubs I used to go to one at the Rose & Crown Hoe Street? Walthamstow) - it's still going and we saw Vin Garbutt there last year.
Also used to go to the Walthamstow stadium for the banger racing.

Vin Garbutt's on at the Davy Lamp on Saturday, if you're interested. (Unless of course you're still in East London in which case the information is useless.)
Last time I saw him I couldn't believe how many pints he'd downed and yet was a) still standing up, and b) able to remember every single word without any effort at all!

No longer in the East End but not in the North East either sad. When we saw him last year his whole set revolved around his operation, hilarious story telling and some fine music. To kind of make him feel at home I wore my Poolie till I die tee shirt.

The Davy Lamp's at the Washington Art Centre. Very popular but partly for that reason I don't like it. You've to get there for 7.30ish to get a seat, and then get bored waiting for at least an hour for the music to start.
