when you're abroad you obviously get charged for using 3G internet etc, but does your phone send and recieve data automatically without you using the t'interweb etc??? thus costing a fortune

also, can you just log onto free wifi etc ok without being charged?

I tried ringing Orange, but got no further than the automated service....

It depends where you going and for how long but I’ve found it’s miles better getting a local simcard. Especially in Asia, were you can seemingly ring and text home for almost free!

Like most things compared to other parts of the World mobile phone companies have our eyes out.

anyone using there phone abroad whilst on holiday should be charged 4 grand a call and 1 grand a text.

Anyone so boring as to need to use there phone to text or go on the internet whilst on holiday shouldn be allowed to go on holiday.

So for instance if they go away and use 'there' phone to call a loved on who may be ill, in hospital or such like should they be charged as well?

There's been a law passed where the data services will be cut off when your bill reaches £40 and you're abroad (unless you opt out).

Depending on your handset you will usually use data in the background. If it's a blackberry then you can turn off the data services in the manage connections>mobile network options folder.

You won't be charged for wi-fi if you use that, however if the wi-fi drops you will automatically begin to use the network and you'll be charged.

A PAYG sim is the best bet, or even a cheap phone while you're out there.

If you do decide to take it remember to phone up to ask for roaming to be enabled before you go, if not then you won't be able to use it.

just make sure you turn off 3G and Data Roaming.
oh . . . . . . . and don't make or receive calls or send texts!!
other than that you'll be fine.
