we heard about it on our 19 seater bus after the last match of the season at Chester. A truly shocking thing to happen, RIP all those who perished

Just seen this video on Youtube of it as I was not alive in 1985.

But I tell you what, there's only one time in my life in which I have seen as intense clouds of smoke like that: 9/11. sadx

It was a horror that changed football for ever.

Let's hope nothing like that ever happens again.

RIP.

I fee a bit of a twit as I first started this thread on the 1st May when the BBC did a report on Football Focus. I hadn't realised the anniversary is 11th May (today).

Of course my sentiments are the same. RIP sadx

Tragic pictures.

It could so easily have been the old Clarence Road stand. Come to think of it, its amazing that it never happened. an old wooden stand back in the days when everyone smoked.

I was playing cricket with a Bradford fan a couple of weeks ago; he said that he'd normally have been in that stand on the day of the fire but missed that match for a family celebration. Makes you think.

An horrific episode in the history of football and often overlooked by the Hillsborough and Hysel disasters but just as epochal. How on earth people can die while atending a football match is unfathomable and thank god the authorities acted to ensure it should never happen again.

RIP the 56

The thing I've never really understood is why the build up of mainly paper rubbish under the stand wasn't cleared. I suppose it is easy to say it in hindsight.

"Although there had been some changes to other parts of the ground, the main stand remained unaltered by 1985. Football ground writer Simon Inglis had described the view from the stand as "like watching football from the cockpit of a Sopwith Camel" because of its antiquated supports and struts. However, he also warned the club of a build-up of litter beneath the stand because of a gap between the seats. Some repair work was carried out, but in July 1984 the club were warned again, this time by a county council engineer, because of the club's plans to claim for ground improvements from the Football Trust. One letter from the council said the problems "should be rectified as soon as possible"; a second said: "A carelessly discarded cigarette could give rise to a fire risk." In March 1985, the club's plans became more apparent when it took delivery of steel for a new roof."

RIP the 56 who died as a result.

No need to feel a twit - the day of the fire was the last home game of that season, so that's why the BBC did a report of it (the last home game of this season 25 years on).

There are many fans who don't go to the final home game anymore, and I heard the story on the TV this morning of one girl who died in the fire - and it was her first ever football match.

Thinking of it fills my heart with horror, I was 10 at the time and can still remember watching the news at my nan's.

God bless all who died and all their friends and family...
