The constituency known as Hartlepool has known only labour MPs. Whereas the previous constituency know as The Hartlepools has known the all of the big three.
The last non Labour MP was Commander Kerans 1959-64, who won the seat for the Tories, but failed to defend it in 1964.
Kerans was the naval attache in charge of the Amethyst during the Yangste incident.
Many people put his victory down to the fact that the recently built Owton Manor estate, full of Labour supporters failed to vote because their polling stations were located down the town. The Town Council had failed to provide polling stations for the Owton Manor area. They couldn't be arsed to travel down there. The Tories, realising this, withdrew all their cars from the Owton Manor area. In those days cars were used to drag people to the polls.
