Only doing this as it is quiet and I'm bored. As I haven't got to any matches this season and you can't really judge from Poolsworld I have based my marks on tittle-tattle, irrational prejudice and the opinions of others. Same as most other posters then!

1 Scott Flinders 7/10 keep
2 Neil Austin 7/10Keep
3 Ritchie Humphreys 3/10 humanely destroyed
4 Gary Liddle 6/10 keep
5 Sam Collins 5/10 keep
6 Ben Clark 6/10 keep
7 Leon McSweeney 5/10 keep
8 Ritchie Jones 7/10 keep
9 Denis Behan 4/10 scatter
10 Adam Boyd 5/10 keep
11 Andy Monkhouse 6/10 keep
12 James Brown 7/10 keep (injuries allowed for)
14 Jonny Rowell 5/10 keep
15 Antony Sweeney 4/10 scatter
16 Steven Haslam no idea
18 Michael Mackay 2/10 scatter
19 Jon-Andre Fredriksen 4/10 keep you need some Scando input
20 Alan Power 4/10 keep but actually give him some games
21 Mark Cook no idea
22 Matty Tymon no idea
23 Colin Larkin 4/10 scatter
24 Billy Greulich no idea
26 Armann Bjornsson 4/10 scatter
27 Julian Cherel 5/10 keep due to Frenchness
28 Dylan Purvis no points but keep due to name
29 Peter Hartley 6/10 keep
30 Joe Gamble 7/10 keep

Looking at that squad we really should be doing a bit better...

Why not?

At a guess I'd say that he's on a good few quid a week and I don't think that he's value for money.

By the way, have you seen our goals against stats this season?

1 Scott Flinders 7.5 - keep
2 Neil Austin – 8 keep (maybe captain?)
3 Ritchie Humphreys – 5 Give him youth-team role.
4 Gary Liddle – 7.5 keep
5 Sam Collins – 6.5 keep (just defend, leave football to Liddle)
6 Ben Clark - 6 keep
7 Leon McSweeney – 6 keep
8 Ritchie Jones – 6 (not all his own fault) keep
9 Denis Behan – 6 keep (badly looked after & played too many games before eventually dropped)
10 Adam Boyd – 6.5 keep (needs kick up backside)
11 Andy Monkhouse - 6 keep (lack of discipline is big problem)
12 James Brown – 7 keep
14 Jonny Rowell –6 send on loan to League Two if we still in League One (play more if we in League 2)
15 Antony Sweeney – 6 keep
16 Steven Haslam – 6 keep
18 Michael Mackay – 5 let go
19 Jon-Andre Fredriksen – 6 keep
20 Alan Power - ? keep - go on loan
21 Mark Cook - ? keep
22 Matty Tymon – ? keep – go on loan
23 Colin Larkin – 6 keep
24 Billy Greulich – 5 keep – go on loan
26 Armann Bjornsson – 5.5 keep
27 Julian Cherel – 7 (based only game I saw) keep
28 Dylan Purvis - ?
29 Peter Hartley – 6.5 keep
30 Joe Gamble – 8 keep, and as Salty said, make captain.

For next season centre-back partnerships should be either Liddle / Collins; Clark / Cherel; Liddle / Cherel; Collins / Clark (i.e. one footballer - one to just defend). Also Jones must be played centre-mid with Gamble. Brown needs to be up-front. Larkin & McSweeney mainly right wing, not on left – Fredriksen back up for Monky.

We're conceding too many - a small part of the blame lies with the midfield, which was terrible defensively, but Gamble changes that significantly.

Then you have to look at the back four -

Austin - I've been going over 15 years and I can't remember us having a better right back (excluding Jon Bass)

Liddle - good footballer, suprisingly competent in his first season at the back - will get better as well

Collins - Vital for Liddle to be alongside a physical presence and Sam's been that, but he's looked increasingly shaky and is not mobile enough to recover from mistakes

Hartley - Shown promise in his first season in league football IMHO. Not even in his best position. Struggled at times but will get better.

And Flinders, all you can really fault him on is communication/confidence issues with the defence, and that could be their fault as much as his.

So from them, particularly looking forward, Collins is the obvious one we have to replace.

I haven't seen enough games live to really comment. However most people want to keep most of the players which leaves little scope for cutting budgets or bringing in new players. This suggests that the players are considered good enough. If the players are good enough then the fault lies elsewhere (no prizes for attributing the blame). After two seasons of struggle drastic surgery is required. Over to you Uncle Ken.

I think Collins would have faired better with a proper left back in the team, his first season was difficult with personal problems and playing in a team without recognized full-backs. This season he has looked fitter but has limited pace, which the better sides expose, though he has
not been at fault for the majority of goals conceded.

Thing is big, mobile, quick centre-halfs dont come cheap.

Put it this way if turner took notice of peoples views on here who to keep we'd definitely go down next season.
Probably with less than 30 points.

I would have said scatter McSweeney but I went to Tranmere on Friday night and thought that he was extremely effective at right back. I could even make a case out that he was our best player.
I then found out that, at Stockport, he played most of his games at right wing back. He played THIRTY FIVE games for Stockport in that position last season.
He has had to wait until game thirty six before he got a chance in that position under Turner, even though Turner started the season with Haslam at right back. Barnsley fans have always said that Austin was as good , if not better, at left back. So there is food for thought during the next pre season.
Also now that Hartley has got games under his belt at league one level and is acquainted with the pace, speed and tempo of this league, maybe it would be prudent to give him a pre season at centre back, his natural position.
Sam Collins isn't getting any younger and maybe the way forward could be a Liddle/ Hartley partnership..........one right footed and one left footed.
So we could have a back four of McSweeney Liddle Hartley Austin to experiment with. Unless of course we bring in better.
Joe Gamble sitting in front of them.............alongside Jones.
The rest of the line up would depend on what system we decided to play.

I think this is where it has all fallen down this season as unfortunately I don't think Turner has a clue what system he wants to play.

Without a doubt.
The problem is we can discuss line ups and tactics till we are blue in the face. Turner just doesn't understand but even more crucially he is unable to read what the opposition managers/coaches are about. It takes a footballer to have the ability to read a game and exploit weaknesses, gaps and strengths etc. Turner doesn't even know the strengths and weaknesses of his own players.
McSweeney had to bang on his door for the chance to play in his most effective position. So so so so frustrating and it must be even worse for the players, especially flair players.

We are all listing players we would scatter but we must remember that we are judging these players under a manager who hasn't got a clue.
Liddle would not be at centre back if Clark hadn't been injured.

Turner says publically that he uses Humphreys as an example to the young players.

He feels Humphreys displays, better than any other player that he has worked with, genuine professionalism. His attitude and work level in training, his lifestyle and his determination to make the very most of his talents are all apparently exemplary.

Ritchie can now be best used I think in a Micky Barron type roll. Playing when we are short but mostly used for his positive influence on other players.

And yes I know that we are now going to get a repeat of him orchestrating the removal of a manager stuff to indicate that he isn't professional.

Well, I've always found it odd that when Ben Clark brings to an end the reign of one useless manager he is applauded. When other pros are part of the removal of a manager who has lost the plot, control of their ermm 'refuelling habits' and the dressing room that is somehow appalling - even traitorous.

10 Adam Boyd 4/10 Scatter (Lots of ability but his strike rate and effort don't match it)
11 Andy Monkhouse 7/10 keep
12 James Brown 8/10 keep

19 Jon-Andre Fredriksen 6/10 Keep
20 Alan Power slightly less than Mackay/10 Scatter

24 Billy Greulich 5/10 Worth trying
26 Armann Bjornsson 4/10 Scatter
27 Julian Cherel 5/10 Keep
28 Dylan Purvis ?
29 Peter Hartley 6/10 keep (Probably a good prospect if he is in position but learn to pass the ball to your team mates)
30 Joe Gamble 8/10 Turners best signing

Actually none of that matters, on paper we have a squad with enough decent players in it to put out several combinations that should compete in this league. What I really struggle understand is how we can have a Centre Half at Left Back, a striker playing on the right wing, with a left winger playing up front, a player that joined the club as a striker and is past his best playing on the left wing, a midfielder in a centre half position (and that was just against Tranmere).

Surely the lads at the club have spent their career to this point learning to be forwards, midfielders, defenders etc so it stands to reason that they will do their best work in those slots. If that isn't the answer then motivation and attitude must need addressing. Either way the manager and coaching staff need changing, if that isn't an option and the fault is that the players aren't good enough in their natural positions then they need to go as do any of those responsible for bringing them in.

I know very little about the technical/coaching side of football and have no aspiration to learn but if I use what I do know (Fantasy Manager games) then you pick your defence from a pot of defenders, etc.

But if you go wild and actually think about it- you don't keep two first string quality players in every position in the team because you can't afford it and they get demotivated.

But say you had an excellent pro who could cover 3 or 4 positions as well as being a massively-experienced positive influence in the camp then that might be useful.

But we don't have such a player. we have someone who has been a liability in every position he has played for the past three years. Scatter and scatter quickly.

pde147 I'm a fan of Ritchie and think he's a great servant to the club and has been a fine player, but I have watched him play in the last year. He's simply not up to League One, that is the brutal reality. I'm all for sentiment and looking after players properly but a time comes for every player it did with Mark Tinkler, Micky Barron, and Williams all people who I hold in the same regard as Humps.

It's pretty criminal that he's guaranteed a spot in the 18 when someone like Jonny Rowell has reached the age 20 1/2 having started 3 league games, someone like him must be getting seriously itchy feet. Hopefully he doesn't become disillusioned with game.

What do you want for the club, sentiment or progress?
