First thing is to decide what make you want and to be sure that you can be arsed to walk it. Easy enough on warm summers evening but not so when its pissing down.

Have you had dogs before? If not then decide on breed; exercise requirement, whether they can deal with being alone, whether they are safe (no dog should ever be alone with a small child) some are more placid than others but they are all essentially wolves.

They range from tiny toy thing like a Bichon Friese up to monsters like Bull Mastiffs and every point in between. You really need to decide on the breed first. As for mongrels - trouble is that you never know what you're getting or its attributes. Everyone will have a good story about a mongrel and if your kids are big enough then they're fine but be careful.

A good few pointers there Mr i,we are undecided what type we want but we want one that aint too big thats going too over take the house. ive had a few mongrels in the past and not had too much bother with them.as for the walking it would get plenty, school runs,shops..and me when i go out on the bike.so just the case of waiting for the right one.

Agree with Mutts, plenty of unwanted dogs in rescue shelters at moment. Give one a home.

True enough but take someone with you who knows their breeds, avoid anything that has any of the characteristics of a bull terrier because they could well have pit bull in them.

get a jack russell, small enough so they are not too overpowering in the house cracking house dogs as well anyone even walking up the path and they sense it and you dont need a garden the size of grayfields also if you take them in the car they dont need the back of the car to themselves and very loving dogs (unless your a rat or a mouse)(or cat or bird)

Go to Sadberge we have got both out dogs from there, they are so helpful and for the price you get the jabs and a voucher to get the dogs spayed when the time comes.

Dalmations are indeed excellent with kids and are a good choice as long as you understand that they need a minimum of between 5 and 10 miles exercise a day.

I asked Mutley to come and have a look at Nelson's paw the other day - to see if I was seeing things - it does look like he's managed to damage one of the middle toes on his front left paw!!! He's on painkillers the size of golf balls!!
The vet said bring him back if he doesn't seem better after the painkillers have ran out. They
might have to do an x ray to see if there's any serious damage sadx

We have a Springer Spaniel, and a rescue cat called fookin Neville.
The dog is wonderful, whereas the cat is a gunt.
I also had the joy of finding Colin the guinea pig dead in his cage this afty. Traumatic!!!

Long story short, dogs rule!
