You'll get much better advice than mine by the resident boffins but there's always the trusty 'system restore' which will at least get you back to square one, if that helps??

System restore as PK says. Take it back a day or two before this happened. Then retry.

Afetr much messing about, it appears that whilst the drivers are being recogniosed the actual hardware(the writer) is not. So when I do the re-boot/restore it picks up the drivers ok but not the actual writer,. How do i re-install the complete unit, do I need take it out of the case and put it back in as thought it was a new unit, its driving me mad

Download a new set of drivers from the manufacturers website.
If it's an executable file the fine, click it and follow the instructions.
If its just a set of drivers then extract to a folder and update them. To do this:
Right click on 'My computer' and choose properties.
Then 'hardware' then 'device manager'
Again right click on the hardware (it may have a yellow exclamation mark on it)
Choose 'update driver' and browse to wherever you have the files located.

If that fails then try uninstalling the DVD from your system (in device manager) then reboot and see if it picks it up on restart.

Remember to cold boot that means turn off completely and restart not just 'restart computer' there is a big difference to the process.

On restart is should find the new hardware and set it up automatically.

Highlight the driver with the exclamation mark and disable it!!!!
Then reboot Computer....go back in and if it hasn't righted itself....enable and again reboot Computer!!!! :sweet:

Happened to my speakers and after doing the above they worked fine!!!! :sweet:

Fixed it, downloaded a Winapsi.dll file and it re-installed the hardware.

Right well, I'm downloading Pools highlights off Poolsworld onto ACDSee 'cos the streamings to slow to play them live. They downloaded alright and played in Winamp but when I renamed them they say 'no application is attached to this function.' They won't play agin now.

So that's my viewing pleasure shagged unless someone can tell me how to attach them to an application.

Mind I did get to see the MK game and Efion REALLY deserved a goal when he hit the bar and Brown's goal at Shrewsbury was a belter solely scored because Mickey Nelson is a crap striker!!

They're wmv's which is why they work in Winamp. I'll give it a go. Thinking about it, I changed the names because they were just a series of letters and numbers but they did have .wmv on the end. :uhoh: D'OH!! :sweet:

Sarf, if that was you changed Windows Office into Chinese, I'm going to send Steve Evans to mismanage your team!! Mind you'd have to try hard to spot the join just at the moment........

Open your video player and then browse to the file and open it, it will then assume the association.

I tried that but it wouldn't find it. I reckon it must have been looking for the '.wmv.'I downloaded it again as well but I didn't change the name. I'll have a bash later, I've got Radio 2 streaming at the moment for the first time since I got here and it's in the middle of the music quiz so I'm leaving well alone!!

Advice much appreciated though from all though.
