Skysports news have been showing live coverage of Bobby Robsons memorial service and they finished the service with Nessan Dorma (not sure how to spell it but you know what I mean) and it took me back to 1990 as I was at the first 3 group games in Cagliari.

That said, my greatest world cup memory has to be David Platts winner in Bologna and Waddle + Butcher doing the 'lets all have a disco' dance.

Any others.........

Roger Milla had a great tournament, not bad for a 58 year old

IMO, football was re-born after 1990 and as you say alot of that was down to Gazza.

I have very vague memories of the 1978 one in Argentina, but my first proper memories are 1982- Bryan Robson scoring after about 20 seconds v France, and I think Keegan and Brooking coming on as subs in a 0-0 draw that got us knocked out and everybody saying that they should've started the game.

The France match was a tea-time kick off, we'd just sat down to have tea and cos it was the World Cup my mam let us have the telly on while we were eating. The other game I mention was a later kick off I think.

italia 90 is the first one i can remember. I was 10. It was magical.

In fact it was that what got me into football well and truly.

As i said in another thread (may even have been on a different board) i spent the next year 'being' toto skillachi everytime we played footy.

Odd but I can't remember the 1970 or 1971 FA Cup Finals, first one I can vividly recall is Leeds v Arsenal in '72. By then we had a colour telly and had moved to Owton Manor. I can remember being most dischuffed when England got beat by Poland and that meant we weren't in the '74 World Cup.

The Brazil v England game in Mexico and the Gordon Banks save from Pele. I know it's become a bit of a cliche, but at the time you just expected Banks to make that sort of save 'cos he could. The worst thing of the entire tournament was the introduction of Peter "The Cat' Bonetti who promptly let 3 in so we lost 3/2 against.....guess who.....Germany.

Senegal beating France 1-0 in the opening game of Korea/Japan 2002. I remember somehow that a television had been put into one of the Woodwork classrooms in the Design and Technology block at school. Having heard a rumour that a television was on at lunchtime in an ampty classroom showing a World Cup game, all the lads walked overe there and watched at least the first half before leaving after lunch.

I remember in 1998 our school, henrys, just abandoned lessons when england we're on during the world cup in france.

and in 2002 at college we played brazil at about 7:00am, this was during our exam period so we just went to college early, watched the games in the exam hall then sat the exam straight after.

Great thing world cups, the country just stands still.

I remember 2002 because it was the first time that the school had decided to show a World Cup game live via a projected screen in the hall. They probably did that to prevent people from having an excuse for just happening to be late for school on the day of an England game. I remember in the lead-up to it there was talk of being able to watch the games whilst having breakfast. Mind you, because I still had to go to school, I could only see the first half of any of the Group games.

ah the 2002 world cup. Was working at Garlands at the time, the cafe thing had just opened and they had the footy on. Watched the first half of England v Brazil at home and the 2nd half at Garlands.

Luckily i was standing in as team leader so i decided to not bother going in for the start of my shift as the footy was WAY more important.

Manager came looking for me, asking why i'm not at my desk. I was sitting next to one of the top guys who calmly turned around and advised the manager to get back to their job and leave us to watch the footy.... good job he was a mate

My dad took me to Ayresome Park to see a 1-1 draw between Chile and North Korea. The Koreans all looked about 5' 0". It was the lowest attended game at the 1966 World Cup.

1978 world cup in Argentina. Sweden v Brazil was 1-1 after 90 minutes, Brazil had a corner and took ages over it. Eventually when they took the corner, Clive Thomas the welsh ref blew for full time while the ball was in the air, Brazil "scored" but he disallowed it as the game was over! clappp
Seem to remember one of the games both teams turned up with similar strips, so one of them had to play in the local teams shirts?

The 1982 World Cup was the first one I ever watched and still the most memorable. Two games stand out, both of which resulted in fabulous teams getting eliminated. Paulo Rossi scored three times against Brazil in what was essentially a quarter-final. Brazil, with Zico, Falcao, Eder, Socrates et al, could only equalise twice. Then you had the semi between West Germany and the France of Platini, Giresse and Tigana. 1-1 at full time, France led 3-1 in extra-time before Rummenigge inspired a comeback. The Germans won on penalties ( ) with the help of their keeper Harald Schumacher who should not have been on the pitch for the shootout, having committed attempted murder on Patrick Battiston.

I vaguely remember that, but i think its mostly cos of the stories from my parents - cos we were on holiday at butlins and my dad took me to watch it in some social club thing there, and with him being french all the old gadgies who hated Germany kept buying him drinks!
he staggered in absolutely paraletic - and for a religious bloke like him it was quite an occurence....

I suppose because the story got told so often i remember it, but in all honesty I cant remember a thing about the game.

The earliest one I remember is Mexico 1986, mainly because of the Maradonna hand ball but his other goal was fairly spectacular, also for some reason I think that Lineker was wearing some sort of bandage on one of his wrists

Did Ray Wilkins get sent off then against Morocco sctatchinghead

Wilkins got sent off in (I think) the first group game.

Lineker broke his wrist and played in a lightweight cast.

My main (probably only clear) World Cup memory is of a bloke I worked with who won a trip to Mexico for the World Cup, only to get food poisoning and end up in intensive care. Bad luck, that.

John Baldwin, he was called, I think.

1990!!! Red hot summer, was at work on lates when Germany game was on, not much work done, everyone was wired up listening to radio commentary. Watched the 3rd place play off in a pub in Kingston actually, think we got beat off Italy , wasnt Schillaci their main man? First game of the 90/91 season saw me at Brentford v Bournemouth that day, ticking another ground off. Was overjoyed when heard that pools had won at Chesterfield 3-2, Heck !! Fletcher still playing all these years on. Even went back 3 days later and beat them again in the League Cup. The start of a great season.

Happy Days!!!

The thing is he was shite. He used to gt it took off him leading to goals all the time, I remember one against Cameroon in Italia 90 that was unreal!! If you'd done that in an England shirt you'd be deported, fook me we class David James as eccentric because he has had a few dodgy haircuts and flaps at crosses!
