There should be a minute's silence/appreciation on the opening day of the season now.

A fantastic ambassador to the world of football, always talked about the game with passion in his voice and a smile on his face, a true gentleman in every sense of the word.

Regardless of who you support, today is a very sad day in football.

R.I.P Sir Bobby.

P.S if some of the clowns playing the game today showed as much passion as he did then it would be a much better game to watch, too many in it solely to line their own pockets, playing the game without a care for anyone but themselves.

exactly mate. A real football man, you only had to read and see his interviews to realise that, always dignified and nothing like people such as Alex Ferguson who have no sportsmanship whatsoever

RIP

The word 'Legend' is one that's bandied about far to easily these days, but Sir Bobby Robson was, in my book, a true Legend of the English, European and World game. He embodied all that's right and good about Football and although it's been expected it doesn't make it/me any the less sad. The world of Football will be poorer for his passing.
The main memory I'll always have of him is during Italia '90 (can't remember the game though, no doubt there'll be a clip of it on TV over the next day or so) with him in his grey suit with the 3 Lions on his breast pocket, doing a little dance on the touchline. Always brings a smile to my face.
R.I.P. Sir Bobby Robson - A true Gentleman of the game.

The Honours system in this country may get a hell of a lot of criticism some times, but if ever proof was needed that the honours system does reward those wo truly deserve, we should look no further than Sir Bobby Robson.

I hope Poolies can find the time to go to St. James' Park and lay a bunch of flowers, a 'Pools shirt, or a scarf in memory of him.

Aye, RIP Sir Bob. I can't stand Newcastle but this fella transcends football rivalry. A true great in every sense of the word. The world will be a poorer place without him.

Well dont tell other what to do if your not doing it.

Sad day for football I hate Alex Ferguson but he said it all,

I was never too big or proud to ask him for advice which he gave freely and unconditionally. And I'm sure I am speaking for a lot of people when I say that.

"In my 23 years working in England there is not a person I would put an inch above Bobby Robson. I mourn the passing of a great friend, a wonderful individual, a tremendous football man and somebody with passion and knowledge of the game that was unsurpassed.

"His character was hewn out of the coal face, developed by the Durham mining background that he came from. His parents instilled in him the discipline and standards which forged the character of a genuinely colossal human being. He added his own qualities to that which then he passed on to his sons.

"The strength and courage he showed over the past couple of years when battling against his fifth bout of cancer was indescribable. Always a smile, always a friendly word with never a mention of his own problems.

"The world, not just the football world, will miss him. Let's hope it won't be long before another like him turns up because we could never get enough of them."

I will be up in Newcastle at some point tomorrow, and I hope to be able to call in at St James, and leave some small mark of respect to a true legend of Football.

RIP Sir Bobby.

I was annoyed at some of the RIP threads (Wendy Richard, Jade Goody etc.) but this one is fully justified in my opinion. Always seemed a top bloke. Ferguson said it all really.

Sadly missed.

You can tell from what people say just hiw highly he was thought of by noyt only people in the game but those outside it. opponents respected him as much as his own team mates, and in future years players who played for him.

He will be missed and as someone else send on this thread, even to this day i can remember him praising Pools fans and his I wish we had 5000 like them in portman Road quote after we played them there.

R.I.P. Gone but never forgotten.

Football League have released a statement saying that a minute's applause will be held on the opening weekend of games in the League in tribute to Sir Bobby.

Black armbands will be worn as well.

Yep, there'll never be another one. His love of the game shone out like a beacon. Sadly crapped on by lesser individuals occasionally but never let his head down and quietly got on with it.

The game is indeed poorer without him.

A true great in a game which is full of frauds and charlatons

Italia 1990 was the last WC in which the England team was 'relatively' close the working man and woman who watched the game and it is no coincident Bobby Robson was the manager

Newcastle United deserve all they get for sacking him in the manner they did

I called in to St James today while I was up in Newcastle. I left a Pools shirt, with simply 'RIP Bobby' on the front. The seats at one end were covered the whole width of the pitch, and the first 2 blocks up; with flowers, shirts, scarves, flags and messages. As well as the Mags stuff, I saw others from Sunderland, Man City and United, Liverpool, Ipswich, and other Pools scarves and flags, and stuff from Holland, Portugal and Barcelona. I can't think of anyone else who could have brought fans from so many clubs together like this.

As one message said:

'In the battle between Heaven and Hell, Heaven has got a great new Manager'
