I've been having problems with our PC 'crashing' for a few weeks now. Without warning the screen goes blank. I initially thought it was a problem with the monitor. A quick press of the power button, and a 'restore previous session' on Firefox gets us back to what we had been been doing, but it was getting a bit irritating when it was happening 5 times in an hour!

So of I go to a local PC repair shop who do a 'Health Check' on it, and they say it's overheating and cutting out, but they've sorted it (don't know exactly what they meant by that) and it should be OK now. 2 days later it starts again, so of I go to the PC shop again, and this time they say it's a problem with the memory, we'll replace it and it will be OK. I only had 256 whatsits of memory, so I asked them to increase it to 1 Gig, and it came home again. But it's still 'crashing', nowhere near as often as it was, and with the extra memory it is running much quicker than it used to.

Any ideas from you Computer whiz kids out there, besides ADG and Ripper of course.

Are you getting any system beeps when it crashes? Sounds like it could be a memory failure. Your motherboard maybe struggling to cope with the 1GB as opposed to the 256MB that was originally in there.

But having said that, This happened before the Memory was changed, Its a strange on that is. Does the machine boot up without any issues?

There used to be a 'beep' just before it went off, but the screen goes off now without any sound. The boot up is usually trouble free, but occasionally 'crashes' again before restarting.

Go to my computer, right click on C Drive and choose properties, then click on tools, then click check now. put a check mark in both boxes then click start. It will give you a warning about not being able to do it while windows is running chose yes to schedule for next restart. Now restart and while its starting up it will run a chkdsk to check your hardrive for any errors.

I've done that. It ran through the chkdsk, finished came up with a screenfull of info, which then dissapears before you are able to read it, as the computer continues to reopen. Once up and running it did come up with a error report.

"You received this message because a device driver installed on your computer caused Windows to stop unexpectedly. This type of error is referred to as a "stop error". A stop error requires you to restart your computer"

But in this case the PC hasn't 'crashed', I was just following your instructions to do the chkdsk?

Ok so device driver is the most likely culprit as to why its crashing, next time that comes up do send report and it should come back with which driver is causing the crash.
