The Life Of Brian and The Holy Grail were brilliant, and gave some of the team a new direction and a new career path into films.
As for TMOL and later TV series of Python I think it's as Cleese said - they had stuck around for longer than they should have done and they had gone stale, and the only funny stuff was when they were repeating or re-hashing old material.
In the struggle to come up with new and innovative ideas, they just ended up producing sub-standard material which would not have gotten them onto TV in the first place.
It's no coincidence that Live at the Hollywood Bowl featured all of the older stuff, as the last TV series was dreadful and a sad way to go out of television.

I found Python amusing in parts, sadly it was one of those cult type comedies where parties of believers would roam the comedy landscape burning non believers who didn't worship at the feet of Python and find every single bit uproariously funny.... never laugh at some thing because everyone else is laughing, judge it on its merits, comedy is like music, tastes differ, the trouble with Python is that if you didn't like it you were classed as a comedy illiterate....
They're a bit like Connolly is now, funny when new and fresh with their comedy inspired by their surroundings and environment, but when they lose touch with their roots they become tedious , pompous old farts who don't realise it as they sit on their terraces in L.A. and visit their therapists ....... and still think they're funny.
