Erm, no, I've never lived on the Manor.

(This sounds like a conversation from one of those ghastly blind-dates one use to go on, in the old days  )

So loads of you have lived pretty much on the Manor, except you're so pretentious that you wanna call it "The Fens" to try and sound posh.

Let's be honest, the Fens is only really the slightly less scutty bit of Owton Manor and nowt to get excited about.

Is there any truth in the one that the cod heads put up fishing nets to stop small pox getting onto the headland?? Or is that just another myth made up by the West Dockers?

Bloody 'ell. There's an outbreak of class warfare on the bunker as to whether the Fens is posher than Owton Manor.

Ey, how did Owton Manor get it's name? I'm not aware that there was a manor or hamlet or anything in that area before they built the estate. Did they just make the name up?

Well, Haswell Avenue that is.

Anyhow never mind how the Manor got its name; what about Lynnfield and Dyke House? The last one sounds a bit dodgy.

Furze is gorse so I assume the flat area around that part of Stockton Road was covered in gorse and prone to fog. Still doesn't explain Owton Manor though.

Some interesting pics of public transport with destination boards indcating they were on the way to Foggy Furze in various places.

My sister and brother-in-law used to live in a cottage on Owton Fence farm, also shown as Owton Fens farm on some old maps.
It was owned by Mr Yuill who was just waiting to build his houses on it. That would be roughly where Fenton and Newark roads are now. There's also an Owton Grange farm on the footpath from the Manor to Brierton hamlet.
So the Owton bit is no mystery; that part of the (future) town was always called that.
It explains the Fens as well. The use of Lincolnshire place names for the streets was just an afterthought.

I should think the manor bit was just a ploy by the council to talk the area up. A cut above the older Rift House if you catch my meaning.

Of course that leaves the problem of why is Rift House so called. They could easily have called it Rift Dugout.

Thanks to Mr head for the research and explanation of the origins of the naming The Fens and Owton Manor estates. I still drive around Hartlepol thinking, 'it used to be all fields around here'.
