It was the season we first played Sheff Utd about 79-80 pools were in crisis as normal in those days and a group of fans me included set up a fund raising committee called Hartlepool United Supporters for Success (huss).
We held a fund raiser in the RAFA club and people out of the crowd got up and sang told jokes and such.
On that night 2 lads got up and sang TLB and everyone joined in and later in the night did the song again to everyones delight.
On the Saturday i had a coach going to Sheff Utd and had a pub booked in Sheffield and when we got to the pub it had a small concert room to which we took over and the landlord plugged in the mikes and off it went the same 2 lads did TLB again and at the game it was song and it has carried on from there.

By the way one of the 2 lads was poolieinaustinstad

It faded away for years then out of the blue it reappeared i remember been at a game away when it was sung and thought its years since i .ve heard that at a game but its the truth.
Also me brothers in borstal song was also penned by Poolieinaustinstad in a pub called the paddock on the outskirts of Peterbrough..

was on that bus to sheffield, what a day that was, AWESOME! The two lads I believe are John P and John L. Brothers in Borstal was made up by a Sunderland supporter from Blackhall.

So hang on, someone sang this song in the RAFA club, it then wasn't heard again in relation to Hartlepool for five years but this is the definitive version? I know of three other versions all sworn as true by those concerned.

There werent too many people going to pools between 79 and 85 to sing anything. It was definately created in the late 70s and sung before 85 though.Time plays tricks on the mind, for example I would says supporters for success was more 81-83 time and more Greensides lads than Rafa crew, remember the cycle ride to Blackpool and do in Foxys niteclub around 83ish.

i recall a member of the greensides supporters for success HLF brigade getting rather vocal with us at carlisle one year as we were singing TLB - thats our fookin song not years etc - he kept the grief up at the station full on attitude and alas for him one of the lads couldnt be arsed with him anymore and paggered him.

so i can confirm greenies lot tried to claim it late 80s

Fact not done or dusted. The fact that a fat bloke down the pub once sang it or that a group sang it on a minibus or at the in a working mens club does not translate onto the terraces. It's another urban myth, I can think of two much more verifiable versions.

Come to think of it, even the version where it was sang to wind up the Middlesbrough fans in the cup just after the Cleveland child abuse thing is much more entertaining and probably about as verifiable.

Like Ronaldo said in those times there was about 50 poolies went to away games and we went from the greenies. The song was sung by us for many seasons on the terrace .
As i have said in my earlier post then faded away for many years till it resurfaced in as EC said 1985.

If it was Sheff Utd away then it'll have been 81/82 not '79 as that was the only time they were in our league.

Katcha, i remember that in Carlisle station in 1989! My first away game at the age of 15 with all you reprobates  Spent the best part of the afternoon in The Caledonian!

We must owe Rolf Harris some commission for the song.

Katcha - What i meant was that TLB was the creation of the Rafa lads around 78-80, on the way back from a game at Donny possibly. The Greensides lot were the driving force behind HUSS around 82-84. Both groups were as different as chalk and cheese, usually going their own seperate ways in terms of going to away games, but occasionally neccessity meant them travelling together. It was sung in that pub in Tinsley before Sheff Utd in 81 and resurfaced one boxing day at Scunny in 84.

got to agree with ronaldo and mouldy old dough on this one but probably the reasons why it didn't catch on straight away was
A) we were usually pisted
B) could n't remember all the words in the right order because we were pisted
and
C) we couldn't even sing in unison because we were pisted
