Before my time, but the number of people I've spoken to over the years who were there must have taken the crowd to somewhere near the number of Germans Clint Eastwood killed in 'Where Eagles Dare'.... about30,000! ..and going by the number of people who couldn't possibly have been there unles they had a fookin Tardis, there must have been a section for foetuses and 'Twinkles in your fathers eye'.....

I have photographic evidence that my Dad was there! There's a picture of him and his mates at the front of the queue in Clarence Road taken at 10.30 on the morning of the match.

When one of his mates (Terry Melkins) died a few years ago, it got passed round at his funeral piss-up in The Chester.

He was 13th into the ground when the gates opened.

And wasn't it 1957?????

i too have photographic evidence from the northern daily mail that my father was on the terrace for said game
but as it doesnt include copyright f reid on said pic is it admissable

I have no evidence that my father was at the match even if he claims he was, I better go and interrogate him to see if he's telling porkies.

My dad wouldn't take me! He was right mind.
I saw how it was against Leeds with 16000 present, after all the intervening ground improvements (don't laugh!). Definitely no place for a kid.

And all the ones who say they were at the Stockport game in 84 when the crowd was 790ish.

I have t to admit I wasnt, I was one of the disaffected who stopped going for a couple of seasons when Newton was sold in late 82.

You're getting mixed up with the 1957 FA Cup match..I'm referring to the 1956 Hartlepool Gay Boilermakers v Manchester Camp Riveters Transgender United game.... OFFICIAL ATTENDANCE...13 ... an easy mistake to make

You don't have to be that much of a swot, last year (2007) was the 50th anniversary.

My Dad must have been the only one to have a ticket and not go. He worked over the road, in the Gasworks, and couldn't get the day off, so had top make do with listening to the roars from a short distance along Clarence Road.

I definitely was!!!!
790 is not an attendance to be proud of. I was at the Easter game vs Colchester the season before when there were 804 there.

I was talking to an Oldham fan and a Tranmere fan at that Stockport game who were doing the 92 clubs thing, they rescheduled their visit to Pools because they, like the rest of us, thought we were going to be voted out of the League in the summer!!!

Who remembers the Sun headline, "It's a carve up, roar angry Maids" after we got voted back in??

Oh yeah, and the arsehole journalist who wanted them in is now dead, ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!

Me Dad did go to Pools v Manu and told the story every ten minutes. The attendance as I understand still stands as the Victoria Ground's record attendance at around 17500ish. Previous to this me father was in the habit of taking me to the match were I stood wondering how long all this kicking a ball around was going to go on. But he didn't take me on the occasion of the visit of Busby Babe team were I understand from me Dads oft told tale that Pools were leading by the odd goal and it was Duncan Edwards who got a grip and ensured the win for Manu. I remember though being in Flaxton Street off Elwick Road some mile and a half from the ground and hearing the roar of the crowd.

I'm sure Mr Mad John will fill in the facts cos me Father never let those get in the way of a good story but I imagine that there's a lot of Hartlepool baby boomers that remember that game.

The attendance for that Cup game wasn't THAT much bigger than our highest league attendance for that season, was it Mr Oracle?

13202 against Darlo, over 12,000 against Carlisle, and over 11,000 against Selby in the first round of the cup, unbelievable. Having said that, the crowd was just as fickle then, it was as low as 3,973 on what looks like August Bank Holiday Monday!!

Using Mr Oracle's stats........
