It certainly is Mike Elliott. Before he gave up his school teaching job he was in a folk band called Northern Front with Nick Fenwick and Ed Pickford. They used to appear regularly at the Nursery Inn. Ed Pickford wrote the classic "The Oldest Swinger In Town" which I have a feeling might be appropriate for quite a few on here :grin:

No, you're wrong, BP...I know Mike Elliott and I don't know Tree :wink:

Mr Splod, I would pay a lot of money to hear Nick Fenwick sing 'Shores of Old Blighty' again. Also his 'Blues are all the same ' (song whose proper name I forget).
I think I must know you if you were around in the Nursery in those days

Ms Grabec, I certainly enjoyed many a happy night at the Nursey, even tried floor singing a couple of times but lousy guitar technique and poor voice proved an unsurmountable obstacle to my career as a singer/songwriter.

You can get hold of Nick Fenwicks album 'Looks a Lot Like Me' on e-bay which doesn't include 'Shores of Old Blighty' but does include my favourite 'John O'Dream' and a few blues. Well worth a listen.

Are you thinking of Jackson C. Frank's 'Blues Run The Game' Grabec?

Right, thanks, Mr Splod, will look up the album. I already have Old Blighty by Bob Fox but I prefer NF singing it. Can you, erm, divulge what you used to sing and I'll probably remember.

Kolley, I'm not sure what the song was called but the chorus went something like:

Take a trip to England, baby,
take a trip to Spain;
wherever I have been,
wherever I've been and gone,
the blues are all the same

Grabec, probably Ralph McTell's Maginot Waltz or Nettle Wine - but there was another guy who sang a lot of Ralph McTell stuff.

Yeah, that's the one. An American folk singer called Jackson C. Frank wrote it. He ended up homeless on the streets of New York and died a few years ago. Pretty sad really.

I know Mike Elliott as well, or at least I have seen him, PC and I went up to Tyne Tees studios to watch the recording of a couple of programmes he did for Channel 4. That doesn't stop him being Tree as well, after all his 'geordieness' is only an act you know, he is really a Poolie. :wink:

My best memory of the Nursery Folk Club was seeing Dave Cousins of Strawbs fame do a solo act there. He was working for Radio Tees or whatever it was called at the time.

That "Oldest Swinger in Town" is a bit dire innit. If the bloke had a voice it might be better ... but only just.
