I'm as thick as the Sengelow cousins when it comes to pc's.

So i've got my broadband installed in my new flat right (moved in with the wife, dunno why!!), so the guy comes, i said i want my pc in the bedroom, but it would be too many wires and drilling and all that so he just said get some wireless thing for my pc, so he sets up the broadband box next to me tele.

Right what do i buy? Where from?

Whats the best one to get?

No experience or clue about wireless internet, as basically i've never needed too know.

You got 2 options..

You can get a wireless Dongle which plugs into the back of your modem and to your PC, Or you can go for a wireless router (which can be safer if set up properly) Also be able to use 2 computers with 1 connection if you get one.

Staples has a deal on a wireless router and connections at the moment. Saves you using a network card then.

Hope this helps? If you need links to products shout up.

I think you went for the wrong option. Get yourself a wireless router - dead easy, a toddler could set it up.

I concur.

I have a wireless router from Sky and a usb plug in thingy in my pc to connect it to the router.

And I managed to set it up no bother so it must be simple!

Only if your laptop doesn't have wireless capability. In essence if its newer than about three years old it will have wifi.

Basically it works like this:

Broadband modem connects through the phone lines to the internet.
[you now have broadband in your house/flat]

Now you need to get it to various computers. For this you need a router.
[routes connection via wires or wireless]

Router sends out a wifi signal which your laptop picks up and connects.

Has your PC got a "Wireless Network Card" installed?

If it hasnt I'd reccomend getting yourself one, Belkin do some good cheap ones on the net they are fairly easy to install, But it means opening up your PC etc, Which I'm assuming might be a bit of a task for you having no experience with PC's?

dunno what to do now.

I guess its my fault for not being in when the virgin man came and leaving it to our lass to sort out.

I reckon it's unlikely the pc will have an internal wireless network card.

You will need the dongle, all we need to know is if the router the gadgey fitted is a wireless one or not, that's me presuming he left you some sort of box to plug a network cable into.

Which is unlikely to be a wireless router.

You need something like this.....

http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/c ... egory_oid=

or if you want to do it on the cheap, I've got an old 2wire wireless router at home I'm not using, in fact I've got two, they are both working. Yours for a tenner, I'll bring it to footie on Wednesday if you like.

Same as this one.....

I've got a couple of 1 year old Dell computers as well if you want them, flat screens, cd writers, very nice, that reminds me, must get a photo of them and stick them in the for sale section.

if he left you the standard virgin media modem go to platinum pc at the side of joannas chippie and buy a virgin modem/wireless router. cost about £23 then unplug the one virgin left you plug in the new one and search using your dongle.
it will find it and bobs your uncle.
cheaper than a wireless router and then only 1 unit
