Emotional return to Hartlepool for new coach Elliott
Jul 18 2008 by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

ROBBIE ELLIOTT will make an emotional return to Victoria Park tomorrow in his first senior game as part of Kevin Keegan’s backroom staff.

Elliott – this week named as the club’s new strength and conditioning coach alongside head fitness guru Mark Hulse – will unpack his kit bag at the club he played for as recently as April, when he made his final appearance for Hartlepool United against Millwall under boss Danny Wilson.

Elliott hung up his boots during the summer to pursue a career on the scientific side of the game, and has been working with some of his old team-mates as part of his new role.

The 34-year-old admits there will be a few more familiar faces waiting for him at the Vic tomorrow.

He said: “It is a lovely set-up, and I have so much time for Danny Wilson.

“He is one of the reasons I kept going for the whole season.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my year there, even though it did not go well for me on the pitch.”

Elliott was in the dug-out for United reserves’ defeat against Newcastle Benfield as they went down 6-2 on Monday night.

This time 12 months ago, Elliott played against Newcastle to make his Hartlepool debut during the 3-1 defeat.

He does not expect a cakewalk for the Magpies this time around.

He added: “They have had two games in Scotland, whereas last year it was the first game for both sides.

“They might be two notches above Newcastle in terms of what they have done game-wise. I am sure it will be a good game.”

And Elliott – who played under Keegan in his first Toon spell and had eight games for Sunderland in late 2006 – says it was not a difficult decision to call time on his playing days.

He said: "I'm coming in under Mark Hulse, who is the head man, and I'm helping him with the first team and reserves.

"You always know when the time is, and I knew myself that quite quickly into the season.

"But it was definitely the right time, and I made the right decision."

So why did the free loading b*stard carry on 'playing' for us till the end of last season, when he knew early in the season it 'was definitely the right time'.

C*nt, we want our money back.
