So the binmen were on strike again today which now means that I have a full bin and what looks like no collection for another 2 weeks rage

This is after the mrs phoned the council yesterday and was told that the binmen were not going to be on strike and our bins would be collected as normal rage

If they don't collect it by the end of the week just tip it all out on the steps of the Civic Centre.

This really is taking the piss. Who do they expect is going to pay for their pay rise?

'Under valued' as quoted in the local rag, what a joke.... Most people who work for the council get paid far more than what they are worth. A bin man for example should be getting a maximum of £5 an hour when you consider what they actually do but I bet they get at least double that.....

isnt the minimum wage £5.62 an hour
but binmen are now spoilt YOU have to take your bin to the roadside for them and collect it after them
they leave mess on the road that we would get fined for
and are finished by dinner time
and dont worry about your rubbish they will work over at time and a half to catch up
they should be paid as anyone else in the service industry single time no matter when they work
council tradesmen are earning up to £28000 a year!
no wonder we pay so much council tax banghead banghead banghead banghead banghead banghead banghead

Maybe not but people with low skill levels can't expect decent wages....

Jonny is obviously still a bit mardy, he's calmed down somewhat in the last 24 hours though. He was advocating forcing them to live on the tip to subsidise this paltry wage this time last night.

It's alright son, I know Sweeney got the winner but it was only a friendly.

How many times? i want Sweeney to do well but he is rubbish in the centre of midfield - and you said the same last year. Hopefully he will make a decent right back or learn how to be effective on the wing but time will tell.......

I was joking Jonny, I don't think I was after a Sweeney debate in a thread that had veered to talking about binmen!!!!

I don't think anyone who does an honest days hard graft deserves to be payed as little as £5 an hour especially when you consider the lowlifes like the Peter Owens of this world.

Nobody can live on that an hour, even if they don't see much of the ball when they play centre midfield

I know a bin man and there's a lot more to it than that, they rarely finish before 4 (after starting at 7am), have obligations to ensure the safety of the public by making sure they don't leave mess behind, making sure they place the bins up against the wall and making sure their tyres etc pose no hazard to the public. It might sound simple to say "only a bin man" but there's still a fair amount of responsibility for the 16k a year most of them get.

Lets not forget the risks they take when picking up bags etc that people have left next to their bins, along with the recycling guys who have to hand sift through rubbish at the side of the road to sort it into its respective container.

They're only binmen though eh... only deserve minimum wage so fook em, next you'll be starting on bus drivers... i mean all they do is drive a bus about a set route and work out change from a fiver...oh, wait....

I know a bin man and there's a lot more to it than that, they rarely finish before 4 (after starting at 7am), have obligations to ensure the safety of the public by making sure they don't leave mess behind, well they must have forgot to tell the people who collect out refuse then making sure they place the bins up against the wall and making sure their tyres etc pose no hazard to the public.yes they do this by simple blocking the road so nothing can get past It might sound simple to say "only a bin man" but there's still a fair amount of responsibility for the 16k a year most of them get.

Lets not forget the risks they take when picking up bags etc that people have left next to their bins, now that statement is bollox they wont take any fooking bags left next to the bin along with the recycling guys who have to hand sift through rubbish at the side of the road to sort it into its respective container.

They're only binmen though eh... only deserve minimum wage so fook em,at no point did i say they only deserve minimum wage i dont think any full time worker should be on less than £15k a year next you'll be starting on bus drivers... i mean all they do is drive a bus about a set route and work out change from a fiver...oh, wait..hey no problem with the fiver i have a big bag of copper to make the change up  ..

All I can say is that the binmen in Hartlepool musn't be doing their jobs then, the ones we have in Seaham are spot on, clean, considerate and take any bags left next to your bin.

I bet Hull's are even better, they fight knife crime as well as cleaning bins!

Run for the hills............

They start at 7am and sometimes finish at 4pm, but generally,as a rule of thumb, lets say they finish at 3:30pm, with 1x30min & 2x15min breaks

That is a long old day.....

And you're right, picking up a bag of rubbish can be dangerous, almost as dangerous as say an air-sea rescue pilots job, or a solider in Iraq

Get over yourself, I never said it was the most dangerous job in the world. I said the things they have to do for such a modest salary don't warrant the abuse they have received on this thread. Instead of trying to take the high ground why don't you take your head out of your arse and look at the reality of picking up binbags in some of the estates around the north east where drug abuse is rife. There may be a slim chance of it but would you go around the streets in all weather picking up bags that could contain used needles, dead animals and other unsavoury items for £250 a week?

The simple fact is if it wasn't for these people behind the scenes making our country tick then we'd be (quite literally) in some serious shiit, why shouldn't they be paid in line with inflation?

I don't have bin bags, I have a wheelie bins.

It is also my believe that the bin men that visit my house won't take black bags with them if they are not in the wheelie bin, evidence provided at christmas when there appeared to be a stand off between one house and the bin men, their black bags stayed out for two collections and were not touched.

Thing is, it's not their fault that collections are now only fortnightly and there is all these crazy rules about recycling stuff, but I think they have received the anger for this on this thread.

Our round was changed from a tuesday to a wednesday a couple of weeks back, a new calender was delivered a couple of weeks before, even though it should have been green bin week the calendar said brown bin, so I put it out, they came and collected green bins only, so last week when it should have been green bins they collected green bins again, our bin hadn't been emptyed for three weeks, when I moved it there was maggots on the pavement underneath it. Lovely!!

We have wheelie bins but the council up here decided to be a bit more sensible by recognising that anyone with a family of more than 3 people is going to fill it by the weekend

I just take my black bags into work and hoy them in the skip if I miss the bin round. It just goes in with the same type of rubbish, I have to go to work anyway so it's no sweat for me. A lot of folks don't have access to such a perk as that, and I wouldn't like to think we had rubbish laid around for 3 weeks!!!

Oh dear

I mearly pointed out the fact that a 37.5hrs isnt the hardest shift in the world

I never demened what bin men do, or the fact the do have to pick bin bags up, isn't that part of their job description

And don't forget, there are plenty of people doing shite jobs in the private sector, behind the scenes, and if they withdrew their labour, the country could end in some serious shit.....

PS

Bin men get more then £250.00

Do they? The one I know gets 16k a year, that's around £1040 a month after tax and national insurance... roughly £250 a week is it not?

And I am fully aware that people in both the public and private sector do these jobs (can't see the relevance to my point, mind). Surely people should not be pilloried for trying to pay the bills in this increasingly difficuly financial climate? Or are they just greedy binmen who do fook all?

I don't think we're going to agree on this, you seem to think £16k is more than enough for what they do, I don't. Simple.

Bye.

Sometimes, only sometimes, it's like pulling teeth on this board

I never mentioned once that £16k isnt enough, others may of, I didn't

Still don't let that get in the way of a debate

I missed the last bin collection so my green bin is choc full. Does anyone know if you can just take such bags of rubbish to he Council skip near Tescos? Is there specific skips for such household rubbish?

I really can't believing that people are arguing that Binmen ARE worth £16k a year plus, it is a disgrace that they get paid so much just for wheeling a bin onto a machine that automoatically empties it.

Like No6 Bus says they cause chaos by blocking the road and leave a mess behind.

I think it is you that needs to get a grip. Bin men move a mobile bin to a wagon and put it onto a machine, they then roll it back (if you are lucky) and you think that doing that is worth more than 8 quid an hour - I don't think so.

Benny 'Yodel' Scully did it for years and died a happy and well off man.

Howay Mr Yloop, 'could contain' is straight out of the Daily Mail.

'Miilions of refugees are believed to be heading for Crimdon Dene......among their number are estimated to be hundreds of paedophiles, rapists, thugs, buggers and binge drinkers.' Or whatever todays scare tactic is. It's always been cushty on the bins.
