Not something to joke about really, is it? The entire population of Italy's Roma people being placed upon a national register and their children being forced to give fingerprints on the basis of their race for the purpose of 'preventing begging'; Italy's highest appeal court ruling it is acceptable to discriminate against the Roma's because 'all Gypsies were thieves'; vigilante attacks being carried out across the country against Roma camps, with some of the worst violence occurring in Naples and being led by the Camorra, the Neapolitan Mafia; Roma being attacked in the street after false claims that a woman had stolen a baby, with a minister from the Northern League (one of Berlusconi's key allies) saying 'That is what happens when Gypsies steal babies' etc. Even supposed left-wing politicians such as Walter Veltroni are getting in on the act. It's like the 1920's and 30's all over again, and it must be stopped.

I studied Italian politics at University and have travelled throughout Italy. It is most definitely a country close to my heart. Yet, it has lurched frighteningly to the right in recent years - Rome's Mayor is a member of the post-Fascist National Alliance for example, and his victory was greeted by fascist salutes from his supporters amassed around the Town Hall. Berlusconi can blame the Roma people all he wants but he himself will know he is missing the point. It is the lack of employment and the slow economic downturn Italy has faced over the past 10 years that are the real problems, not the Roma. I know they are no angels, but this is a very dangerous development indeed.

As someone with family ties to a people who have suffered injustice and persecution for merely belonging to a minority I'd have thought you may have been more sympathetic. How easy you forget.

No Substance? I'd hardly say you're posts are the most informative and substantial on this forum. I've just reeled off a list of facts about the case. What more do you want?

What books? I take an interest in current affairs, read the newspapers, watch the news and keep up with Italian politics. That's were I get my views from.

Do you seriously think it's a good and funny thing that a supposedly civilised country can bring in laws that wouldn't look out of place in 1930's Germany and then implement policies akin to ethnic cleansing?

Was going to say pretty much the same thing.

But remember Kolley, because we haven't had time to develop stone-set ethics out of ignorance over a preiod of 30 years or more, there's no place for our views. Even if they're right yawn1

So what's everybody doing about it then eh??

If it's all cack and wants sorting out, who's going to sort it, or are we all doing distance hand wringing?? The easiest manoeuvre in the world. See, studes have been expressing their opinions for decades but have seldom done owt since the 1970's.

The last achievement I ever saw students do, was finding the narrowest doorway in the venue and sitting in it drinking a purple pint. And declaring their right to do it.

And why, in the student handbook, does it tell birds which way to wipe their arse?? sctatchinghead sctatchinghead sctatchinghead

So excuse us for our cynicism.......

There really are some godawful threads on this board at the moment.
To all those who insist on banging on about Roma/Muslims/Catholics/Ragheads/Scroungers/Young Black Males/Alquaeda/Alnackyer: maybe you think if you reach a certain number of outbursts you'll finish by everybody capitulating ... but what you don't realise is that what you are doing is a bit like wanking - you only get so many goes in your life then your balls drop off.*

Don't say you haven't been warned.

* With any luck, just in case that legend is false, someone will cut them off anyway.

So, let me get this straight; I'm a student (supposedly) so I'm automatically a hand wringer, a do-nothing and clever at finding pub doorways. What if you told I'm not a student anymore, I've finished university and now I'm out in the real world. Does that make my point more valid, has your veil of cynicism lifted? I never said I was going to do anything about it, I am in no position to do anything about it, but it's an issue I feel strongly enough about to discuss on a forum, a place in which arguments and opinions do get thrown about you know. You don't half get some narrow-minded bullshit posted on this forum.

It's a real shame that so many people are thinking of leaving the Bunker, or hardly ever posting, thinking it's no longer worth the candle. Don't think the issue is with people having different opinions...it's that too many seem to think they're qualified to own an opinion without reference to facts

Apart from all the social implications, people with prejudices are just plain boring and terminally unfunny. But I don't really care if people just want to arse around and not bother growing up, as long as I don't have to read them. I do care that many of the people I do like and find interesting are going. Anyone any ideas about setting up an alternative for drop-outs?

Yes, but the people who are bored could relieve their boredom by shutting up and listening to the people who are saying interesting things

No, I never said anything about you at all. It was a sweeping statement about further education and those in it. Usually in year two they all turn Marxist until you ask 'em who's going to run it. confised

A very much 'nail on the head' post there , Chip.
It is very true that intelligent posters, or indeed anybody that expresses an opinion in a genuine sort of manner, is either ridiculed, shouted down, insulted or abused.
Younger members like Kolley and Ginger come across as really intelligent people and I for one enjoy their debating skills.
Everyone needs to be given a chance but some people just sit and wait to pounce at every opportunity.
Grabec also makes a good point about listening.

It just seems like such an easy option for a lot of people on here to generalise and hurl abuse just because they don't agree with someone. Instead of trying to have a sensible discussion a lot seem to prefer the juvenile abuse, e.g. student = lefty (what a dumb opinion!).

Which series of message boards does that remind you of?

It just seems like such an easy option for a lot of people on here to generalise and hurl abuse just because they don't agree with someone. Instead of trying to have a sensible discussion a lot seem to prefer the juvenile abuse, e.g. student = lefty (what a dumb opinion!).

Which series of message boards does that remind you of?

Aye, I've made that point before. Only to be confronted by at least one irate poster saying, "What? Show me the posts you were referring to, which would support your accusation......etc etc"
But I didn't have time

Lazio will be pleased. They'll have the stadium to themselves.

OSP and I tried to turn it into one a while back, but it didn't catch on. Shame.

Like a few bunkerites I look a lot but post a little. When I do, its generally of a tree-hugging nature and generally due to biting to a well cast line. And getting pelters from the usuals, but hey ho.

But it is getting worse, it feels more and more like a school playground. A really run down, tory schoolyard where all the kids bear an uncanny resemblece to the love kids of that Wright gadgy off CH 5 and Jade whats her face. Thing is I'm 46 and really cannt be fecked with that sh1te, so I just read a bit now and again, but much less frequently than I used to. Then I read Chip and Kolleys posts and realised that a fair whack of the bunker feel equally fecked off with the mutant love-childs, so thats very positive.

So hopefully the new season will bring a lot more than just the 7 - 10th position I boldly predict, but also the return to the bunker that I genuinely used to enjoy reading.

Oh, and am I in a minority of 1 that thinks Boland still has a lot to offer the first team this season?

Gigha - old Norse for Devils Island ...
