I am not a little bit computer literate, user only, but have just started to receive pop ups from the above company stating that I have harmful viruses on my laptop.

I thought it was software within the laptop but having done a web search, it is clear it's a virus in it's own right. The pop up is trying to get me to sign up for a anti virus cleaner starting at $34.99 but my concern is that it will see my credit card details if I buy anything off the web? The search on the internet offered some norton anti-sptware to clear the problem but again at a cost and I just don't know what/who to trust?

Any ideas folks?

Whatever you do, DON'T click on the link/license etc!

If you can (preferably from another PC), download and run the following....

1) Lavasoft AdAware
2) AVGFree Antivirus
3) ZoneAlarm Firewall

All are free downloads, all are well worth having....

thanks for your help guys.

Note sure how but my windows defender was switched off which I believe is why the virus got through. Since putting it back on, I have been able to remove the program. Seems to have done the trick as the pop up's have gone.

I have downloaded CCleaner under mattie robsons chins advice. presumably I should just run the software periodically to clear unwanted cookies/files?

CCleaner take out the shite you dont need on your commy. but if you store your passwords on the system they all do one too! I dont use it personally. i do it myself. go to the 'RUN@ command and type in there %TEMP% and delete the lot.

run it once a week i reckon

It sounds like them little shits who made a hole host of things like your talking about (winfixer etc). It won't be the program itself, it will be adware they've made to get you to buy the program. The guys who made it are little shits. Believe it or not the people who made the fake anti virus software (which are actually viruses) are millionaires.

Always tricky to remove. These are the experts at getting rid of this kind of thing:

And always be careful when you buy on the internet, especially when your comp is playing up.

The virus/adware/spyware etc could also have been bundled with trojans and key-loggers etc which can get your credit card info.

If you use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, you rarely get any pop-ups.

I agree

Firefox + the AdBlockPlus plugin means I don't see ads or popups anywhere on the net
