Reginald Smythe became a cartoonist for "The Mirror" in 1954, having spent several years doing odd jobs after leaving the army. Three years later, he began drawing "Andy Capp," featuring characters based on his parents, Andy and Florrie. "Andy Capp" came to America in 1963, and is now syndicated in more than 50 countries. Smythe received the National Cartoonist Society Award for Humor Comic Strip in 1974. In 1998, he died of lung cancer, and his comic strip is now being carried on by a new generation of writers and artists.

Some of the early cartoons featured scenes in Hartlepool like the timber yard that used to on the side of the road just before Throston Bridge.

The only thing crap about the town associated with Andy Capp is the piss-poor statue. I like the statue itself, but it looks as if its been chored from somewhere else and just left there.

One of Hartlepool's worldwide famous sons, and lots of folk don't have a clue where the character is supposed to be from.

If Reg Smythe was brought up in somewhere like Basingstoke, you wouldn't be able to go anywhere near the place without knowing about it.

The north east in general just doesn't know how to shout about itself I reckon.
