...that stated blokes in the First World War trenches who took care over their appearance and kept themselves smart lasted longer in the trenches than blokes who failed to 'keep up their standards' of dress and appearance...... so says a bloke who worked for a 'style and grooming' magazine.
Personally, I reckon if a 155mm shell is heading vertically for the top of your head, a bit of Brylcreem, a wax of the moustache and a neatly pressed uniform aint gonna make much difference.

Oh no they weren't, here's a sample...
'It goes back to trench warfare during the first world war. The people who dealt with it best were the ones who maintained their personal appearance. They found that, too, on polar expeditions. The guys who started turning into cavemen were the first ones to go. It's all about maintaining your personal style and your grooming- they become increasingly important to your own sense of order and well being during difficult times.'
SIMON DOONEY, creative director of Barneys on 'what to wear during a recession'....Financial Times.

I think theres some truth in the fact that people who keep themselves in good nick tend to be good at all sorts of personal admin. It follows that those with a tidy mind are tidy in lots of other ways; keeping their kit in order, keeping their weapon clean, being able to think clearly under pressure that sort of thing.

I can see the logic but its a long way from a hard and fast rule.
