Hartlepool United player says to the Mail "We're up for it"

RITCHIE Humphreys today hotly denied allegations that the Hartlepool United squad are already on their summer holidays.
The Pools captain said the players have been hurt by comments about them throwing in the towel before a disappointing season reaches its inevitable mid-table conclusion.

Last Saturday's lacklustre defeat to Millwall certainly didn't help Humphreys' case, with Pools failing to get a single effort on target. But the left-back is adamant everybody who crosses the line in a blue and white shirt wants to claim a win from each game they play – starting with tomorrow's trip to Brighton (kick-off 3pm). Humphreys said: "As far as I now, everybody is here training and not on their summer holidays. "Everyone wants to work hard in training, to push yourselves into the 11 for the Saturday game and obviously try to win those games. "Just because you are ruled out of the play-offs, when the whistle goes on a Saturday you want to win.

"It's the same as you have done since you were eight-years-old and it will be no different for me tomorrow." He added: "Throughout your career in football you are going to have seasons like this. "But nobody is chucking in the towel. Just as you would expect if we were comfortable in the play-offs. "Generally, footballers want to win football games. I have never known anyone who doesn't." Humphreys insists Pools have to put the debacle against Millwall behind them for the long trip to the Withdean Stadium.

But it certainly won't be easy against the Seagulls who are still in contention for the play-offs and could narrow the gap to just a point if they win and Leeds lose at Millwall. "Brighton are doing well and have obviously got something to play for which makes a good edge to the game." He added: "We had a lot of possession in front of Millwall without really hurting them and our balls up to the strikers weren't great. "We have got to give them the best chance we can as a team for our strikers to get in good areas. "Sometimes that doesn't happen but it is how you react and hopefully we can react in the right way. "It has gone now, we lost the game and we have to bounce back in a tough match."

That's good of him.
