Are you trying to upset me?

It reckons my car is costing me £500 per month and I don't even have any sort of finance or loan against it!

I dread to think how much it would work out to if I'd borrowed money to buy the bugger! stpid

£281.27 for me. But that's taking into account depreciation at a standard rate, not all cars will depreciate the same.

I've decided I'm getting off the car buying merri-go-round (sp?), it's something I simply can't afford to do anymore. My car is now fully paid for, fully serviced, mot'd and does 50mpg. So now I'm going to keep it running with whatever repairs it needs and just tax, mot and insure it every year. I've had it three years now, I plan to keep it for another three minimum and then see what the situation is.

Buying new cars is a con, the government have squeezed any little enjoyment out of car ownership, it's now just another tax refred

Aah, vehicle holding costs. I know something about this being as it is a fairly crucial part of my job.

Firstly, theres no such thing as a standard holding cost or standard depreciation. It all depends on three things; what you buy it for, how long you keep it, what you sell it for, then maintenance costs and incidentals like road tax and interest.

The length of time you hold the vehicle for is crucial. Each vehicle has an optimum holding period and getting this wrong can be very expensive. For example; I costed a deal the other day for 50 x VW Transporter T28 vans.

List price is 13885, the RV (residual value) came in at £9525. This is obtained from CAP monitor - a predictive valuation. That means that the depreciation over 12 months was 4360. However, we get 42% discount on that manufacturer so your 13885 becomes 8053. So end result is that the holding cost is negative. Yep, you could buy it, park it in a garage for a year and make £1500 profit. Well not quite, theres £600 of interest then a bit of rent in the window ect but even so, not bad at all and this is how leasing and rental companies make their money.

I never said it was interesting, just pointing out a few facts. Besides, we've done much more boring than that over the years.
