all 3 premier league clubs in that comp going to get knocked out

shame the 3 in the other cup are still in it, and a good chance the 4th will be. Hopefully they'll all get drawn together in the next round, so at least 2 of them get knocked out, and please may one of them be ManUshited

Because 'Big Dunc' played for them could be one reason

How an A1 carthorse/thug/carthorse made a career out of playing football is beyond me

We'll never play in the UEFA Cup with our small time attitude.

Grimsby will next year though when they win the JPT.

But that 3 million they let us other 72 clubs keep was very generous John.

I assume you are taking the piss, but just in case you are not...

It's got jack shite to do with supporting a small club. I knew what level Pools were at when I chose to support them but that didn't stop me admiring the great sides like Forest in the late 70s, Liverpool in the 70s/80s, Everton (oh yes) in the mid-80s. I used to love watching MOTD and Sportsnight, or listening to the old European nights on the radio. They represented the pinnacle of what an English club could achieve, and all of this came from a rock-solid infrastructure built on fair competition and the reward of excellence. Every club could dream of working their way up and competing or even winning things. Wimbledon, Oxford, Swansea all gave glimpses of what was possible.

It was a fantastic league, the best sporting competition on the planet for me... but a small number of clubs then decided to destroy it for reasons of naked greed.

TV companies used to bid for the rights to show Football League games. That money was then evenly distributed throughout the League (Hartlepool got as much cash from the first MOTD deal as Liverpool). Then in the mid-80s, the godawful "big five" (Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal, Everton, Spurs) used the threat of a breakaway league to keep more of the cash from the ITV deal, with only a percentage being freely distributed as before. They also made moves to end the sharing of gate receipts, and a reduction (later abandonment) of the 4% gate levy that was distributed throughout the entire league.

But that was only the start. They wanted more, and they were determined to get it. The remaining 17 top-flight clubs were a little too strong in their own right to try to fight against, so the safest way was to get together with those 17 clubs to royally shaft every other club in the land. So 22 clubs resigned en masse from the FL to form the Premier League, and ended the concept of a competitive league forever. They agreed an annual three million pound "compensation" deal to split between the remaining 72 clubs, and immediately negotiated themselves a three HUNDRED million pound TV deal with Sky, which they kept for themselves.

aido if you can't see anything remotely wrong in any of that, then you follow a different sport to me.

i was taking the piss stpid everton were my first club, as my dad, god rest him, was from southport. i didn't grow up in the town, and only started going to pools in about '94. a mate took me, as i had just split up from my missus, and he thought it would cheer me up stpid.

i make no apologies for following everton, they are in my blood, and i don't give a fook if they are a premiershit club. in their defence, they are not as objectionable as many clubs up there ; at least i can't be accused of glory hunting (until recently)

however, pools are my first club, i am a season ticket holder and go to every game that i possibly can away from home (esp with a young family at home).

Is that ok like ? sctatchinghead and i think i do follow the same sport as you.

The money that has been pumped into the Premier League has helped take all the interest out of the European Competitions. Because the "English" clubs are so rich and so increasingly dominant there is now very little in the way of competitive fixtures in Europe. Because UEFA are greedy and have it all organised on a league basis, it means that the first time an English club will get a game where the result either matters or is in doubt is the Quarter or Semi-Finals of either cup. What is the point watching these games? I would like to see the ratings to see if anybody still cares about the "Champions" League. Do you care? I don't.

For all the money that's been hosed at the premiership, would you rather watch a 70's Match of the Day or the present poncified offering?
