Monkhouse and Sam Collins for me.

The rest aren't problems with his signings, just Wilson's fault for not playing them.

His signings have actually been pretty decent

Willie Boland was a really good signing and although he is maybe not quite up to this level he is far better than some players who have played in the centre of midfield in recent years......

In short - when he plays we actually have a midfield. When he doesn't we generally don't. he gives the team a structure and a balance. Sadly time and injuries appear to have caught up with him but we generally look beter with him in the team than not.....

Bollocks. Liddle has carried him all season, one paced and one dimensional. He's simply not good enough.

totally disagree with you mate......

When he plays we are stale/shit.....

What structure or balance does he give us [confused]

We need Sweeney and Liddle in that midfield, Liddle can do Bolands job but 100% better......

Sweeney and Liddle together in the centre of midfield? Do me a favour, rather like our befuddled defence this season we keep having the mistake of playing similar palyers for the one role...Sweeney and Liddle both play the same role in midfield, the energetic 'carrier and fetcher' role, a workmanlike role, which allied with a wiser head such as Tinkler did with Sweeney, produced results, once their partnership was broken, Sweeney was never quite the same player. We need one of them and a 'thinker' in midfield to give us a bit of direction and guidance, we need an experienced older head to actually start orchestrating the midfield. We have a midfield of all the talents, sadly they're all doing their own thing.
The defence is in the same boat, musical chairs, and no one seems to have a defined role with players who appear to be at cross purposes, that actually makes them look to be all at sea at times when there seems to be no organisation with players both going for or leaving the same ball, like we're playing some zonal game to some equally sketchy, back of a fag packet plan.

Ooh some cracking debates here lads n lasses i fully agree with one thing though Barkers effort commitment and graft are a good example to any human being. The main problem this season is he has not had a forward that has complimented him. As some one has already stated we will do ok with these forwards in the team but only OK, if we want to progress in this league we need to get back to playing the fast attacking football which has brought us all our previous success over the last 7yrs or so. I feel the team also lacks a Leader maybe Sam Collins should be made captain or Spike (if he signs permanently).

Sadly, some people seem to labouring under the delusion that fast attacking football can be achieved by cramming the team with grafters and runners....a wise incisive pass can open up any defence and make the game fast flowing.

.
I wouldnt say we could make a team with all grafters just i like his commitment. A team needs a blend of different people to make it successful.

Boland hasnt played well of late but he is a far better player than widdrington ever was in my opinion, at his best he covers every blade of grass, we need willie there to break up play, put the tackles in and help to keep our shape in the midfield, sweeney is a headless chicken and just hasnt seemed to improve or develope over the years!

BOLAND IS GARBAGE - WE STRUGGLED WHEN HE PLAYED LAST SEASON, AND WE HAVE STRUGGLED ALL THIS SEASON BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN IN THE SIDE. NEITHER BOLAND OR SWEENEY GOOD ENOUGH TO PARTNER LIDDLE.

People have such short memories,

Boland was excellent at times last season, we won a lot of games at that level anyway with him in the team. He hasn't done so well with the step up but why do people forget what he has contributed? Can I remind people that a Hartlepool United team has never finished with as many points as we did last season. I suppose the same applies to Wilson. Before anyone brands me 'a Wilson lover' or any of that tiresome shite can I say that I am only stating fact.

Oh and don't get me started on the crap people have been spouting about Nelson.......

First off....... Liddle could easily play the Boland role and still have Sweeney bombing forward.....

As for Boland being far better than Widdrington

Regarding last season.... the likes of Nelson, Humpheys and a couple of others played well last season...... They are still getting stick this season, because last season is last season.....

And has for the wise incisive pass sctatchinghead can`t see Mr Boland doing one, he can`t pass forward or pass more than 5 yards.....

Obviously you have some obsession with cramming Liddle an Sweeney into your fantasy team, regardless of the facts. So in your world, players just swap roles at the drop of a hat..? talk sense, it's NOT Liddles style to 'play the Boland role'... this team already has too many players playing out of position to add another one into the pot.
As for the wise incisive pass, who mentioned Boland in that context, I was speaking in general terms of what I believe we need, try reading what I said, not what you think I said.

No I have some obsession with watching decent football. you prick.....

So explain to me why Liddle could not play the Boland role then. mr ferking know it all!!!!!

It`s hardly a major swap is it??? Unlike Sweeney playing right back.

Well according to you, Boland is shite, so why would you want anyone to play the role of a player you regard as shite. Liddle could play any role in theory, you could stick him in goal, he wouldn't be as good as a proper goalkeeper....what I'm saying is, let him play the role he does best!
Now for the Boland thing, I have never mentioned Boland in any context ... I wouldn't have minded the Boland of five years ago, but that's beside the point, I happen to think he's past it now.
Now if you want debate it fair enough, but the insults aint gonna help your cause... it's water off a ducks back to me.

It`s not the role which is the problem, it`s the player playing that role what is the problem.......

Dear Mr Tucker,
Tell you what, I'll keep it simple and repeat my opinion.I think it's pointless playing two similar players in the same midfield role. I like to see a grafter and wise head, as Tinkler and Sweeney used to be. I also believe it's best to get someone in to do a particular role who has that role as their forte. I LIKE TO SEE PLAYERS PLAYING IN THEIR BEST ROLE...MY OPINION.
I have never advocated or even mentioned Mr William Boland for any role in midfield for Hartlepool United, neither have I now or at any time advocated his style of play as role model for any player to emulate and have no intention of doing so now or in the future.
If this doesn't doesn't explain my opinion, the opinion which I hold but do not expect to be shared by anyone else, well I can do it in cartoon pictures for you.

Mr Tucker that's a yellow card for personal unwarranted abuse. Hot debate is fine but invective littered insult isn't.

Please refrain, there's places you can do that and this isn't one of them.

Regardless of what our best central midfield might be I wouldn't say that Liddle and Sweeney are particularly similar players. Liddle likes to sit deeper, tidy up, change the direction of attack, pick out passes. He rarely carries a goal threat; Sweeney likes to chase backwards and forwards, make attacking runs, get ahead of the strikers, get goal chances. Liddle tends to let the ball do the work, Sweeney is more likely to run with it. I rate Liddle as the better of the two but I don't feel I am comparing like with like, and any reluctance in playing them together wouldn't be based on them being too similar to each other. confised
I do, you don't, that's where we differ. I feel that there's a lack of guile, direction even... they both have a sense of naivety still about their game. Sweeney in particular has not carried his game forward since his partnership with Tinkler was broken up... My comparison is based on their indivduality of play, they both seem to be doing their own thing and sacrificing team play as a result. No two players are exactly the same, but how it comes out with them is that they don't seem to work in harmony with each other..I'd play Liddle too, by the way.

Barker & Monkhouse were both great signings. I think McCunnie & Collins have a lot of potential too though I've yet to see it really realised. I'd also suggest that Ian Moore, whom I certainly underestimated when I first saw him, was a good signing; unfortunately the travelling tooks its toll on him. Lee & Craddock look like tremendously valuable loan signings. I missed out on seeing Duffy play for us but I haven't heard many people criticise his play for us.

I'm really happy that we've got Sweeney, Liddle & Boland and from what I've seen of them, I believe any pairing of them can work well. Boland doesn't appear to have been at his best when I've seen him this season.

So what HAVE the Romans ever done for us?
