Been in a bar tonight that was playing 'The Best Of....'

Now I've tried and tried and I know there's people on here who love the genre.

But I don't get it, what am I missing?? Pedestrian bass player, poor vocals, cack lyrics, tingy drumming, ordinary keyboards. Shambles to my ears, so what's the secret??

Listen to the first two Wailers albums produced by Lee Perry, they're the bollocks. Never did anything as good after that.

African Herbsman is the place to start - awesome. By the time Britain and the world bought into Bob he was on a downward spiral. Redemption Song is a belter though.

The Wailers early 60's stuff was much better than his 'commercial' stuff!!!! :sweeeet:

Not a big fan of Bob Marley meself....I could reel off 20/30 Jamaican artists who I'd rather listen to and don't get the recognition he did!!!! confised

Problem is, I'm not inclined to go searching for his better stuff now although I bow to superior knowledge like. Both Redemption Song and Buffalo Soldier were played last night. The first is a bit of a ramble and sounds like a demo, and the second has nothing much to say in between all the 'Ay yo yo's.'

The one that finished me off was 'I'm iron, like a lion, in Zion.' If he was still on this mortal coil, I'd send him a rhyming dictionary. sctatchinghead sctatchinghead

Bob Marley is easy listening reggae for beginners,he is the artist that popularised reggae. It has been said that Bob Marley is the most recognised face on the planet too.I do enjoy listening to Bob Marley, but I wouldnt say he is my favourite by a long shot.
You have to say he did OK though for a wife beating, womanising scouser.
As Muttley said there are many better Jamaican artists to listen to,if you really want the best of roots reggae then check out the album "War In A Babylon" by Max Romeo & The Upsetters. For me,that is the best reggae album of all time.

I think it went

The Clash were neither middle aged or sold out, they quit before either of those happened.

Mr I,Bob Marley may not have been the all time greatest, but his music is far from crap

Bob Marley, now don't get me wrong, but I have always though a singer should be able to sing, in tune and sound good, he couldn't do any
He had a dreadful voice, however he was black and smoked pot and had dreadlocks, so he ticks all the right boxes, doesn't he!

It has absolutely nothing to do with his colour hairstyle or his dope habit.I just happen to enjoy reggae music, which Bob Marley does well.
As for singing in tune & sounding good, thats a matter of opinion.

 -if you want technically good singers go listen to G4- if you want brilliant original songs delivered by a top bloke you cant go far wrong with sir william of bragg.

Aaah

But

"Fifteen years later, in Rhoden Hall to the north of Jamaica, Bob Marley was born. His mother was an eighteen-year-old black girl called Cedella Booker while his father was Captain Norval Marley, a 50-year-old white quartermaster attached to the British West Indian Regiment.

The couple married in 1944 and Robert Nesta Marley was born on February 6, 1945. Norval Marley's family, however, applied constant pressure and, although he provided financial support, the Captain seldom saw his son who grew up in the rural surroundings of St. Ann to the north of the island".

From the Bob Marley Story

I think "Scouser" is stretching a bit, scruffy dope smoking smelly etc ok but Scouser? he doesn't deserve that
