It's more than a song, it's a legacy.

In a nutshell...in the 1960s we released Never Say Die/(Who put the sugar in my tea???...just for the record if anyone has Who put the sugar in my tea...I'd love to hear it).

Lyrics were a bit downbeat such as "we're not very flash and we haven't the cash here at Hartlepool" and "we go on the park and we're full of hope but sometimes it seems that we just can't cope".

It gradually became the motto of the club.

Then in 2006 it was released as a double A-Side with Two Little Boys which Elvis' Glasses and Mr I and co organised with fellow Pools fans.

More upbeat lyrics such "move over big three because there's now a fourth", "we go on the park and we're tall and proud. the crowd at the vic want to sing out loud because they know that we'll win and we'll never give in" etc.

Made number 24 in the chart, outselling Madonna in Hartlepool by 10 to 1.

Great achievment by those who took part.

Then we got relegated. banghead But there was a sole banner that had the words "Never Say Die" and it hit home.

And it's gradually become the club motto. Just about covers it...

I vaguely recollect chants of 'Never say die' from the terraces in the early 60s. Not sure whether the chants came before the song or the song before the chants, but I'd guess the former. 'Howay Dockers' was another. Simple lot we were back then. Had to do something to keep warm in the Rink End.

Don't think so, this is poor memory by some of the old folk here.

Never Say Die was originally released in 1972, prior to that the phrase nor the chant was heard.

I certainly am getting old. May be just I chanted it and didn't realise everyone else was staring at me.

Who is Christopher, Ignatius?
