Apparently Northern Ireland is a province not a country, so Mad John would be right with his answer of three.

So the answer is 2 then?

England and Chillyjockoland.

Wales is not a country, it's a Principality.

Or is it three?

The question there is whether or not Ireland (or now just Northern Ireland) is part of Great Britain.

It's definitely not included in "Britain" with it being across the sea, but it may be part of Great Britain.

This link seems to indicate that it is only the mainland.

http://stamps.nzpost.co.nz/Cultures/en- ... atBritain/

But if that is the case then why do Paddy and his pals in the North of their island wear GB on their top at the Olympics?

I didn't think that the Channel Islands were included in the British Isles. They are direct dependencies of the British Crown, maintaining their own legislative, monetary and taxation systems. Each have their own parliaments and a Governor, appointed by the Crown.

If so, then surely there are only three countries in Great Britain.

Correct, and that is why the Channel Islands are not part of the UK, but they tend to get included within the definition of "British Isles" which is just a geographical term for that area, and also includes the island of Ireland (most of which is very much not British)

Spot on. Which is why I have a British passport, pay 20% tax and still have pound notes to spend in shops that don't charge VAT. It's a wonderful life

My answer was 4,England,Scotland,Wales & Northern Ireland.
Noel Edmonds said its 3 - England Scotland & Wales

What has surprised me when Ive asked people is how many included the Republic of Ireland.

There's only one country in Great Britain for fook's sake.

Rounded up to the nearest whole number that is, cos bits of the country are overseas.
