it always reminds me of the Leonard Cohen song (which I've probably misremembered :uhoh: )

An old woman gave us shelter
kept us hidden in a garret
then the soldiers came.
She died without a wispa

Ah yes, gained in translation

The author wrote:
Il est mort sans surprise -- Unsurprisingly he died
(it was a owld gadgie in the original)

The translator heard:
Il est mort sans soupir -- He died without a whisper (or a sigh literally)

I much prefer "without a whisper"

On a (loosely) connected theme, but in 'might as well post it here as anywhere else mode' , a letter in the Guardian this morning describes the writer O Henry on his death bed surrounded by family and friends. He looks so pale and lifeless that they start to wonder whether in fact he has shuffled off:
" 'I know,' said one of the group, 'touch his feet - no-one ever died with warm feet.'
O Henry slowly raised his head from the pillow, commented, 'Joan of Arc did,' and promptly expired."

Well since we seem to have hi-jacked the thread let's continue.

Q. What was Jeanne d'Arc heard to say as she started burning?
A. "Je veux des cendres!"

Well, anyway, I bought a pack of Blue Ribands the other day, because the label said each one had only 99 calories. But I just ended up eating two at once

And now I know how Joan of Arc felt
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her roman nose
And her Walkman/Hearing Aid started to melt

Play on words Mr R.

je veux des cendres = I want ashes
je veux descendre = I want to get down

same pronunciation like
