On the way back from that ill fated expedition to the world cup, I picked up a box of 3000 fags in Belgium. Since then I decided that when they are gone that's it - no more fags.

So within a couple of hours I will become a non smoker just like Mutley. I am kitted out with chewing gum and other gear along with a slice of determination.

Good luck Mr I, once this ban comes in and when smokers really will be treat like lepers I can imagine a huge percentage of people trying to stop. Anyone know what the actual date is when that will come into effect in England?... i'll wait till then I think.

Good luck Mr I

As an ex-smoker meself I know how difficult it is. Once you get through the 'ill' bit you'll be fine.

There is no question that I will succeed this time. There is a psycological barrier that I broke last time I quit. Once you realise that it is not that difficult you can do it. I stopped for a month last time and only started again because I thought I could become an occasional smoker. Wrong !!

It's a three pronged attack. You've got a physical dependancy on nicotine, a psychological dependancy on the habit and a psychosomatic and sympathetic weakness when you see someone with a fag or smell one. I swear I'd go back on fags if someone lit a Gauloise near me. You have to change your routine completely and miss out your trigger points. Nicotine leaves your system in 24 hours.

As it is I gave up fags over three years ago and now I only smoke Hamlets with a pint. Got the drinking up to 24/7 like........... :-( :-( :-(

But that's why it's so easy to fall off the wagon; you think it'll be easy to stop again. I honesty think lots of exercise really helps!

our lass has zero willpower in her attempts at trying to give up, she'll make any excuse (such as the nicotine patches or nicotine gum makes her ill), but I've never smoked so I don't know if she's being entirely honest with me or not.............................

I had absolutely no intention of packing in when I did. My gran had been living with lung cancer for about 3 years, but it wasn't growing or affecting her.

Then one day I was at work, having just rolled and lit a tab in lobby, and the phone rang. It was my mam to say that she'd taken a really bad turn and the end was nigh. When I got off the phone I went back to my rollie which had gone out. I was about to relight it, then suddenly decided I would never smoke again.

I didn't sleep properly for a few days and I had very bad flu-like symptoms, but one morning I woke up feeling really healthy, and I could smell and taste everything properly again. Amazing.

The ironic thing is that my gran had never smoked. The cause of her lung cancer was asbestosis, presumably from when she worked at a laundry handling overalls worn by asbestos removal men.

I still remember my first tab proper - ie not the ones behind the garages when we bought them as singles and were given a free match that you could strike on the wall.
18, in a club in London. My mate Lynne said mind this tab while i go to the toilet will you? I was stood there, pissed. looked at the tab in my hand and thought, why not? Why she couldnt have taken the tab with her I have no idea.
18 years later and I still have problems. I thought I could become an occasional smoker - its a lie. I've done that for months on end but always returned at some point.
For the last four years or so I've only smoked with a drink in my hand. No good, you just end up drinking more. The hangover is five times worse as well.
Its a disgusting habit. You realise how much when you stop and still it entices you back. Its all or nothing. Just think what it does to you and realise how much you'll reek.
Stay strong during those weak moments.
Good luck.

I used to get sent to get my Dad's 5 Woodbines from Tommy Raw's Newsagent in Northgate, when I was about 11. One matchday I went over, bought 5 woodies for myself, and smoked them, one after another, as I walked to the ground. Apart from an occasional one when p*ssed during my RAF years, I haven't smoked since.

If only my sister had done something similar, instead of taking up smoking, because it was the thing to do, she might still be here now. Instead of dying 3 years ago from her life long addiction, which is what smoking is.

My drinking is under control, and not an addiction at all!

I've worked with people in London, who havent smoked till their late 20', then took it up because it was the social thing to do, cocknockers
