He was always known as Lennie at Charlton, i will ask around as we are at home tomorrow or perhaps he says why in his autobiography which i cannot find at the moment.

I came across your question - as to why Mr Lawrence is called 'Lennie'.
I'm not sure that this is the correct answer...
But isn't 'Lenny' (and therefore 'Lennie') one of the many nicknames or alternative names for the name 'Lawrence'?
