Me being a 'young 'un', I know nothing about him.

Would I waste my money paying to see him at an after dinner type thingy bob event?

As far as I know he's the only player to have played for Pools and lifted the European Cup as captain during his career.

That and the fact he played under Cloughie would be enough to persuade me to listen to him.

Not sure.

I was only 6 then!

But I know that they both played for Pools when they were smelling of wee wee.

I thought that Ray Kennedy had been captain of them at some point though?

I'm probably's mistaken :uhoh:

Was Emlyn Hughes not captain of a Liverpool European Cup winning team too?

EDIT: I know he never played for Pools like!

John McGovern was an unassuming character who moved to Hartlepool at an early age - went to school here - Henry Smith's I think. Good job he was good at football. He was a really good technical midfielder - good at everything though not particularly flash. He was part of the best Pools side by a long way until the current era. He was a product of the Clough era and played at Pools as a young lad - 16/17 years old but still dead good. He followed Clough to other clubs - Derby, Leeds, Notts Forest. No doubt many of his stories will be about Old Big 'Ed who liked him not only because he was a very good player but also because he was very loyal to his manager, kept his mouth shut, and gave him no problems.

I've heard he's supposed to be good. If anyone has stories to tell, it's him. Spending that much time around the legend that is Brian Clough, he has got to have a good script.
As a plyer, I think Clough liked him because he was Cloughie's eyes and ears on the pitch, on the training ground and in the dressing room.

I reckon so, no other player was so sought after by Clough.

I've seen John McGovern at a do at Old Boys, it may have been an HUDSA do, he was quite good craic and still looks in pretty good shape, could still probably do a job for Pools as a squad player!
Didn't he wear the No.7 shirt during his Pools days?

Well there you go, my memory told me that Kennedy went up the stairs and picked the trophy up. That's what you get for not watching top-flight football, ever!

well they all looked the same with that mad tash

I think he also hold the record for the youngest player ever to have played in all four divisions of the English game having played in the 4th and 3rd divisions for Pools in 1967/68 and 1968/69 and the 2nd and 1st for Derby in 1968/69 and 1969/70. He was only 19 when he achieved that feat. Must be Pools most successful former player.

He used to (may still) do the commentary on Forest matches for BBC Radio Nottingham. I have to say I went off him during the Pools v Forest game, as he was a bit patronising towards Pools.

Obviously he has to be biased towards Forest, but I heard bugger all mention of the fact that he started out at the Vic. He was gutted that Forest lost.
