BBC News - New Zealand to ban greyhound racing
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cz6l1xjnd6xo

Could a ban happen here? People do think it's a cruel sport and I wouldn't really want to know what happens to the retired ones that don't get rescued.

My dear old Dad "worked" several Greyhound Tracks in East London doing Tic-Tacking and could tell you many stories of this corrupt sport.

Favourite being, "slowing" the hare (very minutely) causing the lead dog to slow but the other 5 then passing it.

When I was a lad in Yakkerland a bloke down our street had a couple of greyhounds he raced at local tracks like Hartlepool. When he didn't want them to win he just gave them an extra big dinner!

A very changed game now. Retired greyhounds are now properly accounted for and if they can't be found homes end up in the trainers kennels being looked after.

The game is nowhere near as crooked as it was, Greyhounds are very consistent and the sport much better regulated. But as you say it is a dying game the world over. Sports gambling like football are much more appealing to the young as they think they know something about it and place their accumulators or be builders at very poor odds in the hope of a big win.

Protesters will get their wish and greyhound racing will die a death. But oddly they don't think it through and instead of lots of mew greyhounds there will hardly be any and the breed will become a lot less. Then the protesters will start on ending horse racing and another breed will shrink.

I knew a yakker bloke who used to jack his dog off just before a race to not win and get better odds for the next race.
Wierd behaviour :angry-tappingfoot:

pointless protesting when its dying off anywhere. once most towns had a track and now there is only one in london. can see a point however to protest about jump horse racing like the grand national with deaths of horses a regular occurance.
